Is it the Penguin and the Riddler?

It seems that the Johnny Depp as Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin rumors will never truly die down Maniacs. Just a few weeks after Warner Bros. executives said Nolan was on vacation and that there was no set story for a third Batman film, we now have those WB executives joking around with co-star Michael Caine, with this update sent in by Maniac Joeybaloney. Caine himself has passed along what was said to MTV and it's coming back full circle to the same actors possibly playing the same two characters in the third installment.

“They’ve already got them in mind,” said Caine, when asked who he’d like to see take up arms against the Caped Crusader. “It’s Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper.”

So Caine is like the rest of us, reading gossip in the tabloids, right? Except for one thing…according to the actor, he confirmed the news through the studio itself.

“When Christopher [Nolan] said we were going to do ‘The Dark Knight’ next, I didn’t what that meant in Batman terms,” related Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. “I said, ‘What’s the story?’ and he said The Joker. I said, ‘Oh, s–t! How are you going to top Jack [Nicholson]?’ He said, ‘Well, I’ve cast Heath Ledger. And I went ‘Ha! I couldn’t top Jack, but if anyone could, maybe Heath could.’ And he did.

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]

While Caine indeed reinforced these rumors, albeit with a humorous attitude, he did confirm that Nolan has yet to script anything out.

“No. He’s gone. He’ll come back with a script sometime.”

I would wet my pants if this was true. However:<BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />In response to speculation that Philip Seymour Hoffman was approached for the role of the Penguin, as a British arms dealer in The Dark Knight, franchise director Christopher Nolan said he considered the character difficult to portray on film, explaining, "I'd be more excited to have Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film than to have the Penguin. There are certain characters that are easier to mesh with the more real take on Batman we're doing. The Penguin would be tricky." <BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />Also:<BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />The Dark Knight co-writer David Goyer has revealed that Catwoman and the Penguin are unlikely to feature in future Batman sequels.<BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />Goyer explained that, despite re-introducing the Joker in the upcoming sequel, the filmmakers want to explore new villains in future films.<BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />Mind u this is from wikipedia and the first thing the source is no longer available. Plus, I doubt WB wouldn't want to go with more the A list cast of Bat villains. Anyway, if this is remotely true, I like i said will wet my pants.

Hanso are you saying they are bringing the joker back for the third movie? If so any idea who new guy will be?
hanso 9/8/2008 4:47:03 PM
No dude, that's not what I'm sayinng. Goyer apparently said they want to look at unused villains for the other sequel. This is unlikely however becuase Nolan doesn't want to take on unrealistic villains so that takes out a lot of the remaining villains that haven't been on screen. Black Mask & Deadshot could be done in Nolan's universe. So could HUSH but Nolan's universe ain't ready for HUSH.

Until I read that Nolan is indeed on board for a 3rd Bat-flick I don't want to hear shit.

I say kick Nolan off of this Batman franchise and give it to someone willing to incorporate the DC Universe and all its goodness into these films.

If Hanso thinks The Dark Knight owns his son, will Batman 3 own his daughter?

I like this idea of Depp playing Riddler and Hoffman playing Penguin. They both are made for these roles. However, I'd like to suggest that the character of Freeze be revisited in this new series of films despite the attempts to make them as realistic as possible. Patrick Stewart would make an excellent Mr. Freeze. They did consider him for Batman & Robin in '97, but since that film flopped, I'm glad he didn't get the part then. But they should offer him the part should Freeze be optioned as a villain in the future. I'm sure they could come up with a realistic portrayal of Freeze if they tried.

I'm fine with Depp as the Riddler, although I can't picture it. But yes, That seems... right. Hoffman as the Penguin?!! No. I doubt if it will happen. Hoffman is too big, no offence to Hoffman. Although the installment he was in was a disaster, I have to say that Danny Devito as the Penguin was a good choice. The flick, and therefore Devito's character, was all too goofy and family friendly of course. But Devito was a bang on choice. I also thought the first Batman movie with Keaton was awesome. Jack Nicholson was great. It was all good. Just different than what Nolan has done. In fact, We could have continued with that look and feel, without the slide into goofiness, and all would have went swimmingly with the first franchise design. I like Nolan's Batman a lot, but the world he puts him in has some problems.

Now that would be an awesome addition for the next movie. Not the biggest Hoffman fan,but Depp as the Riddler would definitely peak my interest. Start writing now Nolan!! LOL!
