So, is there a sequel to the horror "Descent", i.e DE2CENT on the way? Enquiring horror fans want to know. Ryan Rotten over at Shock Til You Drop asked the original 2006 director, Neil Marshall, who is currently working on DOOMSDAY. While Marshall says he won't be writer or director, there will be a sequel and he will be involved. He states he's in contact with the producers and he's going to watch over his creation to make sure there is "quality control" on it.

Here's what he told Ryan Rotten:

"I've got a few story ideas, they've got a few story ideas and we're just throwing them into the mix."

When Ryan asked Marshall about whether Shauna Macdonald's "Sarah" would be appearing in the next one (she lived or died depending on where you watched the movie, USA or England)...Here's what he had to say...

"Shauna just had a baby so she's not gonna be ready to film for a bit," Marshall adds, then, "['De2cent'] is a ways off." But there is palpable interest coming from his former leading lady. "She wants to continue the journey a bit more. As far as I'm concerned, there's only one way to take her character, she has to die. If we didn't kill her at the end of the first film, we have to kill her at the end of the second one," Marshall laughs. "So, I don't know - I don't know where we stand yet."

Why can't they leave well enough alone now a days? The first was good for what it was, a decent romp through a cave but where else can you really take it? For once I would love to see one of two things in the genre: 1. A stand alone horror film in which the director and producers are creative enough to leave alone and come up with a fresh idea next film, and 2. a horror movie that is planned out for a sequel (leaving open ended points through the movie so they are explored later), not just tacking them on like Saw, Hostel, Scream, and now The Descent are doing.

what's the deal with doing sequels to movies that sucked and not doing sequels to movies that deserve it these days?

I guess it's a cheap movie to make and the movies that deserve sequels would cost too much to make.

I agree, what is this shit! they are making a sequel to a marginally successful horror film? That never happens.... just like they never make money on video.... that must be why they do it, cause they are so unsuccessful.... all in all who cares, Why get your panties in a knot, for every fan that hates the idea, there is one who wants more... I'm indifferent

You guys seem to forget this was a british film and was released there first. I'm not sure how well it did there but it must have done well enough to even attempt a sequel. Also, I saw this film dl from 360 marketplace so I'm assuming it was the U.S. ending i saw?

videocide, if the version you saw ended in the car, then, yes, it was the US version. The movie did fairly well locally considering its budget and even better worldwide. I believe, though, that this movie does not need, or rather, should not have a sequel. The moment you they start capitalizing on the creatures, it will remove one of the best aspect of the movie, which is Sarah's suggested descent in madness.

The movie actually did quite well, being a low budget movie of $7M and making $57M worldwide. Personally, I thought it was the best horror movie of last year. But I also believe it doesn't require a sequel. I may go see it, but after 28 Weeks Later, I'm not expecting British horror sequels to be any more compelling than American horror sequels.

The version i saw ended with her in the cave. She got to a car but it was a dream sequence. I thought she stayed in the cave and became one of them, or maybe she died later?

videocide, you saw the UK version. (Spoilers below) There's a very small but critical difference between the UK and US endings. In the UK version, she apparently dreams or hallucinates that she escaped to her car, but when she wakes up realizes that she's back in the cave, the movie ending with her facing a very gruesome death. The US version edits out her "return" to the cave, so her escape to the car is transformed from a dream to reality. It's only a 30 second edit at the very end of the movie, but it does change Sarah's fate from death to life. For some reason, studios always think US audiences need to have at least one survivor in horror movies.

A few of the characters had boyfriends, and I imagine the police would be interested in a case where this many people went missing. I could buy a sequel, but it would be really tough to pull it off without repetition. Having Sarah still be alive and trying to escape the cave and having new characters potentially meeting up with her might work. Personally, though, I think they sort of have to take the idea in a new direction. Perhaps make the movie slightly more combat oriented. It sounds like a balk-worthy idea, but then you'd be stuck arguing that Aliens was a horrible sequel.
