I admit the story doesn't move far along this month, but it doesn't matter. Gray-skinned ex-spy Desolation Jones continues his search for the allusive stolen Hitler home porn movie. This month, he wades knee-deep into Los Angeles's adult film industry, ultimately meeting Nicole a young starlet that lectures him on the finer points of the business. They spend the bulk of the issue in a bar, smoking marijuana, drinking, and getting to know each other before Jones asks about her employers those suspected of lifting the coveted Hitler porn. Then, he quite simply kicks some ass. By the end of this issue, you'll know more about the porn industry than you ever wanted.
Those in the big-guns-big-breasts-and-kneepads crowd won't like this dialogue-heavy, talking-heads extravaganza. Granted, the last couple of pages feature Jones savagely beating a pornographer on set, but the rest of the issue's just talk. Fortunately, J.H. Williams employs some interesting visual styles during the aforementioned stoned bar conversation. As Jones smokes and listens to Nicole, Williams draws her in a variety of recognizable comic styles he adds a little Frank Miller here, a little Terry Dodson there, a splash of Alex Maleev, and then maybe some David Mack. The rotating styles continue through the end of the issue, when Jones finds a nasty surprise waiting for him at home. I must admit, Williams found a way to make a long talking-heads segment visually intriguing. It probably won't please people that want books with stories no more complex than "What if the guy with a gun for an arm fought the hot robot chick?" But, honestly, it's a brilliantly simple idea that hadn't occurred to me. Bravo, J.H. I owe you a beer.
Warren Ellis remains a writer in the strongest, most glowing sense of the word. Guys like him make comics worth reading. Read DESOLATION JONES at all costs.
