Entertainment Weekly released a first look photo of Evangeline Lilly’s character Tauriel from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I find it it interesting that Entertainment Weekly calls this a “first look” photo. It may be one for the masses, but Evangeline Lilly’s Tauriel likeness has been out for a while in action figure form. I am not saying I want a look at Smaug or the Necromancer. I’ll save that for Dec. 13, 2013. It just would have been nice to see something or someone who has been sitting on the action figure shelf for the past 8 months.
Evangeline Lilly describes her character as “slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill. Tauriel is a new character that is not present in any of Professor Tolkien’s written work.
“Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard”, Lilly explains. “She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.”
Will fans be accepting of this new character in Middle Earth? Will they care if she has a love story? Sound off below Maniacs!
