Destro Has been Cast??

According to the Sanchez clan over at IESB, the main baddie for G.I Joe has indeed been cast and it's David Murray, a stage actor with little to no big theatrical roles under his resume. In fact, he did make an appearance in Batman Begins and his role is listed as that "Jumpy Guy". It's up to you believe it or not and for what it's worth, IESB did break the Vosloo casting a day earlier and they're more trustworthy than some other sites out there. It's not as if the character really needs a face anyway since he has his mask. We won't know for sure until the studio verifies it but for now, the role of James McCullen Destro XXIV is possibly locked by...

If true, this is the cast of characters so far...David Murray (Destro),  Dennis Quaid (Hawk), Arnold Vosloo (Zartan), Channing Tatum (Duke), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Rex), Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Sienna Miller (The Baroness), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Heavy Duty), Said Taghmaoui (Breaker) and Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow).

Plot Summary: The movie will be a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I Joe will hit theaters Aug 7, 2009.

I hope Hollywood doesn't screw this up.

"will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established."

I will have to see it to believe it.

Was he the guy in Batman Begins who was running around the shipping area, yelling out, "WHERE ARE YOU?", to which Batman responded (while hanging upside down behind him, "Here"?

I get the fact that there's no need to get a name actor to portray Destro due to the mask, but I wonder what led to this guy getting the gig. I'm also really curious to see how they are going to pull off Destro's mask in the film.

I sure as hell hope this guy can act. Yeah, he's wearing a mask, but that means he's got to be an even better actor cause we have to be able to get everything through that mask! Remember Hugo Weaving in V? And honestly, I was hoping for a Scot. I mean, Destro's a Scot, for crying out loud.

I was hoping they would get Michael Dorn, I even though he is not a Scot and Black, I thought he had the physical appearance to pull it off and the way he played Worf I thought he could have been a good Destro. Now I wonder who will play Cobra Commander. I do like the Arnold Voslsoo pick as Zartan, after seeing him in the Darkman series I can see it.

Afwick,

Michael Dorn was my first choice for Destro for all the same reasons you list. He has the deep, dramatic voice that demands attention and obedience that Destro has.

Who's the Joseph you're referring to?

It seems like the age of the cast is somewhat spread out,,,,,that could be good or bad. I don't remeber Destro having a Scottish accent on the show, although I could be wrong. Voice will be the most important thing. He hopefull can do a deep voice. I am actually very excited for this. I think it is going to be a major kick-ass popcorn flick, which is pretty much all I am looking for. Yeah, it was great cartoon as a kid, but going back and watching it now, the cartoon sucks. So does Thundercats, He-Man and a few others. Transformers has held up pretty well. And to think I would never outgrow that kind of stuff.....Damn my getting older!!

Anyone got any idea if we're gonna see Stalker in this?

afrointelligent • Jan 30, 2008, 11:24am •
Yeah, Michael Dorn would have been great in this role.

By the way, a black guy did do Destro's voice in G.I. Joe, his name is Arthur Burghardt.

destro the main baddie? no cobra commander in this one?

Pendragon0 • Jan 30, 2008, 12:27pm •
It was first established in the marvel comic that he was the thirteenth Earl of McCullen, a Scottish lord (laird) and that the Iron Grenadiers were his household guard. Later the cartoon (which I hated compared to the comic, sorry guys) picked up on that and even that he was related to Lady J. I agree he needs to have a great voice. My only concern with Micheal Dorn is that he's getting up there. I think they'd have to do a James Earl Jones/Darth Vader thing if they picked him. As to him being the main bad guy, it fits the mythos. Destro was the Field Commander for Cobra usually, with Cobra Commander being in Strategic Command. Duke and Hawk have a similar relationship.
