J. Allard, the Microsoft executive overseeing the software development tools for the new Xbox, announced at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco the new Xbox system will have an emphasis on high-definition content and an integrated media browser and "microtransactions" for in-game purchases.
Among the features apparently demonstrated was an on-screen "Gamer Card" that gives information other players can see on a gamer's location, achievements in various games, time playing specific games and level of skill.
Other features will include a custom music player and a "store" where players can make small purchases of new characters, parts for virtual racing cars, etc.
The new Xbox is supposed to be released late in 2005 in time for the holidays.
