Paramount Pictures and the Paranormal Activity producers have proved yet again that it’s possible for a very profitable venture in today’s dreary box office climate. Find the right horror script with a minimal amount of special effects or explosions, insert that release into the right weekend with no competition, and watch the profits come marching in. That seems to be the story for this weekend, with their latest horror tale The Devil Inside taking down $34.5 million in sales over the weekend.
Not only was the performance the best ever for an early January weekend, the R-rated film scored twice the amount that Paramount shelled out for the film in just the midnight showings alone. Produced on a budget of only $1 million, it found $2 million from the midnight previews and went on to score $16.8 million after only its first day at the box office. All of this in spite of terrible reviews out of Cinemascore, with all demos placing a F or D- next to its title. With males making up 54 percent of its audience, the film found the victory spot thanks to the youthful crowd. 60 percent of Friday’s audience came in under the age of 25 while 85 percent were under the age of 34. Paramount chief Megan Colligan attributes their decent marketing campaign as to a reason to the success.
"The campaign was very scary and it was intended to push the envelope," Colligan said. "The conversation online became very robust."
Following in the 2nd place position was Paramount Pictures’ other recent success story, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. After taking down two consecutive wins at the box office charts, the fourth installment in the Tom Cruise-led franchise fell 30 percent by pulling in another $20.5 million on 3,555 venues across the states. The latest numbers has increased the domestic cume to $170.2 million, a decent number given the price tag of $145 million. The film also shot up another $27.7 million from foreign markets this weekend, pushing that international gross to $287.9 million after four weekends of release. When combined together, the fourth Mission has $458.1 million worldwide.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows follows in the 3rd spot this weekend, taking down another $14.0 million in a 33 percent drop at the ticket counter. The fourth frame’s score has increased the studio’s domestic gross to $157.4 million in sales. With another $177.2 million coming from oversea territories, Warner Bros. has a global sum of $334.6 million after 24 days of release.
Sony Pictures executives may breath a slight sigh of relief this weekend, with David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo dropping the lowest amount (24 percent) over the weekend. With the studio recently telling everyone that they stand behind a sequel in development, the first installment grabbed another $11.3 million on 2,950 venues across the nation. The film’s third frame score takes the domestic cume to $76.8 million, still shy of that $90 million budget. The Rooney Mara-Daniel Craig vehicle also continued its rollout overseas, taking in another $12 million from 33 foreign markets. It has found $29.3 million total on the international scene, making for a worldwide tally of $106.1 million.
And taking down the 5th place spot is 20th Century Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The third installment in the popular family brand grossed another $9.5 million over the weekend. Produced on a manageable budget of just $90 million, the latest numbers has increased the studio’s gross to $111.6 million. The 3D family adventure also found another $30.1 million from 62 international markets over the weekend, taking the global haul to around $240 million.
The Devil Inside’s profitable victory helped the industry score up a 25 percent increase across the board over last year’s results. Check out the rest of the top 10 down below and sound off with your thoughts.

Wow! Movie made 34.5 million and only cost 1 dollar to make? What a return!

violator14 1/9/2012 10:10:52 AM

LMAO!!! Who wants to buy 2 tacos when you can make a movie and make $35 Million in one weekend.

lusiphur 1/9/2012 11:35:26 AM

In the article, they mention the budget was only $1 million so it did 35x what it was made for.  Too bad I heard it was not very good.  It'll probably drop like a hot rock this weekend.

People will waste their money on anything.  What was that P.T. Barnum said?  Seriously, with all the quality movies out there right now this is what people line up to see and guarantee a sequel.  Thanks.

Who is PT Barnum?

karas1 1/9/2012 3:43:58 PM

PT Barnum is the man credited with the quote "There's a sucker born every minute."  He is one of the founders of The Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus and pretty much the father of advertising.  And he founded the city of Bridgeport CT.

As one of the owners of the circus he imported a giant elephant to the United States.  Elephants are normally pretty large but this one was extra large, Andre the Giant large.  They called him Jumbo which was an African word which meant, you guessed it, extra large.  This is why the word jumbo is now a part of the English language.

I could tell you lots more about Barnum if you are interested.  Probably not.  But I did major papers on him both in middle school and in college and am very knowledgable about this subject.

Devil Inside may have cost only $1 million to make, but it sure cost a hell of a lot more than that to market.  Ads for that movie have been everywhere, and I suspect they cost more than $35 million to put out there.

Wiseguy 1/9/2012 4:32:25 PM

How pretentious to apply that PTB quote here. It isn't like anyone here hasn't wasted money or better put spent money on something others may  thumb their noses at. And it doesn't have to be just money it's also time spent watching some of the shows we watch. Maybe you should tell the world what they should watch ye of the higher moral authority on film

And yeah Wyldstaar has to be right on the money. Maybe because the film cost so little they spent a lot on advertisement, I swear I was seeing a promo for this every 10 minutes the last week or so.

Wiseguy 1/9/2012 4:36:40 PM

Ah excuse my overreaction, it's that time of the month

Sherlock Holmes 2

* spoilers *

Watched this last weekend. I enjoyed this more than the first one. The story was a bit more structured and I recognized bits and pieces from the books (e.g. his brother, his enemy, the falls). There were more jokes and witty banter.

[wanted to write about the ending but mania is not letting me post - weird]

Anyway, felt the ending should have been better - fade out after the arrival of the package - no re-appearance!

4/5
