Dexter continues his impromptu education with Trinity this week while Trinity appears to have other plans. The cliffhanger scene of Trinity completing the assembly of a casket was a fantastic one and it gets an explanation this week. Dexter and Trinity take a little road trip this week and truly bond with Dexter even admitting to having guilt over killing an innocent man. Of course,he didn’t tell the whole truth but just enough to get Trinity's attention and to get Trinity to truly open up to him. Dexter’s reaction to murdering the wrong man last week was something that I was the most excited about because it’s something new for Dexter to go through. This week, Dexter is ready to get back on the horse as it were. Rather than wallow in his mistake he wants to give back to society by taking out another true serial killer. There are no doubts about Trinity’s guilt and Dexter will follow Trinity out of town to exact his brand of justice. Honestly I was hoping for a bit more of a complex evolution of character after Dexter killed the wrong man but putting Dexter and Trinity together on a road trip wasn’t such a bad thing. Dexter socially inept secrecy and Trinity’s overt creepiness was a really entertaining combination.
I hadn’t thought much about Lundy and Debra getting shot since it happened but the twist in that story this week was exciting. Who shot Deb and Lundy? That shooting was a very “Giallo” sort of shooting with the mood lighting and only the killers black gloves pm screen as a clue to who committed the murder. What about Deb’s musician ex-boyfriend? How tall is he? It’s easy to forget that he was a criminal informant so it wouldn’t be a huge stretch for him to kill Lundy but only wound Debra. At any rate, the creators dropped this little bombshell at the perfect time in the series. The question is how many crazy love life situations can Debra get dropped into before she finally has to be locked away. Speaking of love life, this new neighbor situation with Rita is more soap opera than drama and will only be interesting if Dexter ends up killing the guy. Dexter is a solo act a lot of the time so the story makes sense but it’s just not interesting. Rita does need something real to do on the show other than take care of the kids in small scenes. It requires mentioning also that LaGuerta and Batista are back at it again. There's not much to say about that at this point other than you could see it coming.
The show has been good this season but I have to admit, I miss the suspense of the last couple of seasons. Other than early on when Dexter thought he has lost the body of a victim, things have been fairly easy going for Dexter. The other thing I love about Dexter is his internal monologues and this week’s is also really good. Dexter has always thought of himself as not being a true human. He’s incapable of showing affection the way others do and just being a social person like regular people. Every emotion that is common to regular people is uncommon to Dexter. This week in the closing seconds of the episodes Dexter asks a question of himself that is not only funny but is also a doorway into Dexter seeing himself in a way he never has before.
No, it’s not as suspenseful as past seasons but the characters are still very entertaining and the trinity killer while not as prolific as someone like the Ice Truck Killer is one of the creepiest the show has ever seen and he’s key to Dexter’s growth, so I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up.
Well, I tip my hat to those of you who suspected the reporter.
Masuka is the shortest guy on the show. Deb and Lundy's shooter was Masuka's height. So unless the shooter was standing in a hole in the ground, it can't have been Trinity, or Deb's ex-boyfriend, 'cause he was pretty frickin' tall.
It's got to be the reporter. Though why she's the shooter I have no idea.
