The Dexter thread used to get multiple web pages full of Maniac comments...and now gets very few.  I'm not sure why...could it be the skyrocketing costs of premium channels like Showtime.

So far this may be my least favorite season of Dex (and that's saying something) but it's early and I'm hoping that changes.

I'm following three dramatic series that air at 9 PM on Sunday evening (thanks to my DVR and On Demand), they are True Blood, The Killing and Dexter.  In my opinion Dexter is the weakest of the 3.

The Dr. Vogel character is pure slime and I don't like the way Dex kowtows to her.  You can go a lifetime without ever being called perfect... but when someone tells a relatively intelligent person that they are perfect the usual reaction is...What do you want?  When Vogel said that the prime directive of the code was self preservation and asked Dexter why he didn't kill his sister...he should have instantly split the scene...that hag is nothing but trouble.

Vogel also implied that a psycopath is incapable of love...a perfect spot for Dex to remember the love of his life from last season...but  strangely the writers continue to keep Hannah McKay out this seasons story.

Hannah will show up at some point I'm sure.  I can't wait for that.  And I really enjoy Dexter's dynamic with Vogel.  He's always had Harry around in his head which is really himself technically so it's cool to see Dex's reaction to a mother figure in his life who seems to love him unconditianally just as she told Dex that Deb loved him that way.  Vogel seems like she's expects Dexter to fit the exact psycopath mold she's used to but she's starting to notice differences and I think Dex already knows he's a different kind of psycho and that has been his journey through this whole series.  He's discovering that he can truly love and have empathy for those he cares about.  I'm still waiting for a big baddy to emerge since this Brain Surgeon guy doesn't seem all that scary yet.  I'm assuming Vogel might turn around and be the antagonist.  And Jennifer Carpenter is just stellar as always.  The whole scene in the precinct was awesome.  I loved when Dex syringed her and Vogel was just like "Ooh, that's interesting".  That made me chuckle.

 Is this the last season?

Yes it is.

If you haven't noticed, this season is becoming a sort of "response" to Hannibal. This week's killer is a cannibal whose victims are eaten; even the relationship between Dexter and Vogel mirrors the relationship between Hannibal and Graham, or Hannibal and his psychiatrist. But, in the end, Dexter proves to be much worse and much more dangerous than the cannibal/Hannibal. LIke the writer's are saying, "Hannibal, eat my shorts! Dexter Rules! Pwned!"

So I think Vogel is the big bad, and the real villain here. Do I think she's the brain surgeon? Not at all.

I think she's a sociopath, who is working to morph Dexter to be a perfect psychopath. He'll end up killing Deb, or contemplating it, before recognizing what a monster he's become.

Season ends with Vogel on the table, but not sure what happens to Dex. I think he goes to prison, but I could see them giving him a "happy" ending.

I thought Vogel was just playing Dex at first with the phone calls about an intruder in her home and secret DVDs being left for her, then they had the supposed "Brain Surgeon" call her, so I'm guessing that's out the door.  Still I'm sure something else is up with Vogel.  I'm with SilentKiller that she's the "big bad" this season.  Just not sure exactly yet, what her end game is other than to maybe reveal Dexter to the public, have him put in the pyscho-ward where she can continue to study him and write a new book about "Creating The Perfect Pyschopath."

Put me in for the vote for Vogel as the big bad.  As far as the movie reference in the Title of this episode ... "What's Eating Dexter Morgan" ..... seriously, you can see no connection from this episode to that title.  Dexter is struggling with how to deal with Deb and Vogel, and this particular episode features a canibalist .... I get it.
