Variety reports that Warner Bros. will turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork Akira into two live action feature films, the first of which is being fast tracked for release in summer 2009. The studio first had the rights several years ago but let them drop and as anime/manga has been picking up, they decided to fight for (and win) the bidding war once again.

The upcoming twin-bill is being described as Blade Runner meets City of God. The studio has closed a seven-figure rights acquisition deal with Kodansha, and has set Ruairi Robinson to direct a script by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli). Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance will produce with Appian Way's Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson.

Plot Concept: Each feature will be comprised of three of the books in Otomo's series. The drama takes place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago.

Oh YES OF COURSE! NEW MANHATTAN. BECAUSEE GOD FOR BID WE SET THE FILM IN NEO TOKYO LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE. So do they realize that Akira is just another name in Japan and there are lots of guys named Akira? So then they'll probably just end up calling the film Jeff since they seem on americanizing it.

Boohoo and cry for the story being relocated so that your average American moviegoer will find it more interesting and entertaining. I could really care less.

The only movie that I can think of that translated to an anime style live action was The Matrix. Unless they use a similar formula this is gonna be cheesy. I agree they should just leave the setting in Tokyo instead of americanizing it like everything else and it better have like a 9 figure budget.

Ya, go ahead and cry up storm about where it's being made...Why don't you wait and see what comes of it before slitting your wrists...

A bold and ethical move would be to make sure the whole entire cast of the Akira live action movie is Japanese, no exceptions!!!

BTW...a animated movie they should make into a live action film is Heavy Metal 2000 aka Heavy Metal: FAKK 2, it had a wonderful story...sort of Barberella, Aliens and Terminator...meet Lord Of The Rings. It is what the Chronicles Of Riddick should have been, but wasn't.

And while they are at it...they need to make a live action version of the original Heavy Metal animated film, also!!!

Yeah, lets set it in Manhatten. It worked for Gozilla.

NOOOO!

But seriously, I'm going to wait for a trailer before I pass judgement. But my initial thought?

NOOOO!

Metal...is it Deja Vu or am I seeing things? this looks exactly like the comment you posted in the other anime post...It is, and you must be tired to repost it here then again, it does relate and go hand in hand lol...

Yes, Miaforcer, I am tired indeed, and I ran out of things to say (laughs!!!).

Alright already I am American and I realize this should be in Japland also. We realize this. But AKIRA had years to develop this right so it looks like we Americans swooped in yet again....
