Well it seems a bit redundant but officially Vin Diesel is the talking alien tree Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel, Vin Diesel, and director James Gunn have all released this image of The Fast and the Furious star with his onscreen persona.
James Gunn had this to say via Facebook: “Yep it is completely official. AND he's amazing. I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I'm kidding but I'm not!)”.
Then Gunn commented again saying: “Also I hope this puts to rest all the silly Thanos-Vin stuff which people just seemed to make up out of nothing.
Official Press Release: “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the next epic adventure from Marvel Studios has started shooting at the UK’s Shepperton Studios.  Directed by James Gunn (“Slither,”“Super”) from his screenplay, with a story by Nicole Perlman and Gunn, the film will introduce audiences to a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The all-star cast includes Chris Pratt (“Zero Dark Thirty”, “Moneyball”) as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek Into Darkness”, “Avatar”) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (“Riddick”) as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace (“The Hobbit,” “Lincoln”) as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker (AMC’s “The Walking Dead”) as Yondu, Karen Gillan (BBC TV’s “Doctor Who”) as Nebula, two-time Academy Award® nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Amistad”, “Gladiator”) as Korath, with Academy Award® winner Benicio del Toro (“Traffic”) as The Collector,  Academy Award® nominee John C. Reilly (“Chicago”) as Rhomann Dey, and six-time Academy Award® nominee Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs,” “Fatal Attraction”) as Nova Prime.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is slated for an August 1, 2014 release in the U.S.

Is this news?? I thought ebveryone knew this months ago. Im confused

DarkXid 12/23/2013 9:07:06 AM

There was a video of Diesel walking around on stilts about a month maybe two ago, he was walking around on the Fast and Furios set I believe and he was talking about it being part of his next role.  As a tree.  Or I thought he said as a tree.

Like he was going to be doing the motion capture side for Groot.

He was having a lot of fun on the stilts and even knocked on someone's trailer...I don't know if it was Walker's, but Diesel seems like a genuinely cool guy.

So... does this mean he is not Vision?

BunyonSnipe 12/23/2013 1:41:05 PM

I think that's Paul Bettany...

Wiseguy 12/23/2013 3:06:25 PM

I thought he would be playing Moondragon.........because you know they're both bi-sexual

violator14 12/23/2013 3:18:28 PM

Ahh i just got the name, "Groot" stems from "root" as in a tree. hmm... lol

Assume Disney/Marvel are going to target the kiddies with this one.  Talking Trees and Racoons...the potential is there for huge tie-in toy and game sales...can't expect middle aged men to buy all of them (we call them collectibles).

Muenster 12/23/2013 7:02:08 PM

Given Bin Diesels stiff acting style... He could play a tree.

Just kidding. Vin's great.
