Digital Color Grading explored

VARIETY spotlights a postproduction color-enhancement technique called digital color grading as employed in THE TWO TOWERS. The technique enables selective color manipulation and shifts in a subject's color balance or hue, and is described as employed to craft Gandalf's ultra-white costumery and to enhance Viggo Mortensen's eyes in outdoor shots.

Digital colorist Peter Doyle says, "The idea of color grading is to give all the visual cues to an audience. Do you want to see the eyes, or do you want to bury them?"
