Just a few days after we hear Jerry Bruckheimer is working on a new movie called G-FORCE (which turns out to be no relation to the old anime), we're now hearing that scribe Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series) has been signed by Imagi Animation Studio to pen the screenplay for GATCHAMAN. The  film will be based on the successful Japanese franchise created in the early 1970s by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida which aired in the U.S. as Battle of the Planets and G-Force, the TV series soon became one of the top syndicated shows. Besides Dini handling the script treatment, Kevin Munroe (TMNT) will handle the director duties & Lynne Southerland will work alongside as a producer.

Imagi's co-CEO Francis Kao has made the announcement..

"We are excited to have Paul on our talented 'Gatchaman' team," said Kao. "His extensive background in animation and superhero comics will contribute greatly to this ambitious action movie."

"The original series was one of the classics of early anime, and the film will be very true to the Japanese source material," said Dini. "As a studio, Imagi is constantly breaking the boundaries of animated adventure. Not only are their action sequences amazing, but their characters are driven, complex and play for life-or-death stakes. It's a great environment for a writer with a rather dark take on animation."

Plot Concept: The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth's only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders.

Expect GATCHAMAN to hit theaters in early-mid 2009.

Ok, with Dini and Munroe on the job, I'm mildly optimistic.

Maybe I missed something in the last couple updates on this film, but is this going to be an animated film? I was under the presumption it was going to be a live-action feature, but since both the screenwriter and director's backgrounds are in animation I would think Bruckheimer will have this film animated as well. Come to think of it, that may be the smart play since I think G-Force would be too cheesy done live action.

It's going to be animation from what I've heard, rgtchtiger.. And Jerry Bruckheimer isn't involved with this film. I was mentioning that he is involved with a seperate movie called G-Force that we published a few days ago..That film is using the G-Force name but it has nothing to do with this franchise.. Jarrod

rgtchtiger - I had a similar feeling when Transformers was being made that it would be incredibly cheesy, however I was pleasently surprised when it came out. Granted, there was a small amount of velveeta for flavor, but overall, not bad. I would love to see a live action version. This was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. I believe there was a live action version in Japan done at some point but kind find much on it. Maybe just a pilot for a TV show or something.

Oh, heh...oops. Thanks for filling in the blanks there, Jarrod.

Why isn't this a live action film???

I don't get too psyched about movies, especially remakes or re-imagined's but I have been itching to see some Gatchaman action since the release of NTT East's (Japan) Animated Commercials some time ago. Even though they were short, they nailed it. I think you can still download them. 2009 can't come soon enough.

Don't jinx this by saying Transformers shows how it can be "good." *shiver*

if it looks like the CGI from TMNT, then it shouldnt matter that its CGI, because TMNT was brilliantly done. actually CGI has hit a state that if say, somebody wanted to redo an old cartoon from the 70s they wouldnt be limited to just "live action" if they wanted it to have a particular art style and character design(like Turtles) I wouldnt be upset if StarBlazers or Robotech got the CGI treatment, and they kept the anime look of the characters. Overall, I AM waiting for StarBlazers and Escaflowne and Robotech... much more than Battle of the Planets or Voltron (but I'll still see them)

Yeah, I wouldn't be too upset either. There is some anime that just wouldn't work in live action. Especially when you have real life actors flying around in colorful costumes. Just looks fruity if not done right.
