According to Cinemablend, Robert Rodriguez has announced that he is planning a direct to video sequel to the upcoming film Grind House.

The spin-off would be based on the character of ‘Machete’ (Danny Trejo), a character that doesn’t so much appear in the film [s] as he does in one of the fake trailers created for the movie.

Cinemablend writes:

If you’ve seen any of the kickass trailers for Grindhouse, then you’ve seen Trejo as Machete, a bad ass dude with, well, two machetes.  He is doing a Machete spin-off movie, and it’s likely going to be direct to DVD. Rodriguez seemed pretty adamant about this, as if the film is already a done deal.

KJ's Take:  Direct to Video?  Why are they doing this?

Name brand. Saves on marketing, distribution and film prints.

Further more, why not? Custom-made for teenage sleepovers.

YEAH, THIS SOUNDS LIKE IT CAN BE FUN, IM PUMP FOR GRINDHOUSE, AND IM REALLY HOPING THAT THEY DO MORE MOVIES BASED ON THE FAKE TRAILERS, LIKE MACHETE AND WERVOLF WOMEN OF THE SS

Why are they doing this? Are you sure they really should be paying you to report on anything other than what the weather looks like out your window KJ. Obviously to make money junior, and to Rodriguez's credit he knows a screen version of an obscure character will not be profitable but a direct to video version will give fans what they want and make Troublemaker some coin without the huge costs of marketing and distributing for the big screen. If you need any other obvious explanations please feel free to ask.... I'm here at least once a day.

Why direct to DVD??

Just release it to theaters.

Why is it going to DVD? EASY. No one will pay money to see a film starring Trejo. Second, have none of you seen the terrible From Dusk till Dawn sequels? Apparantly, enough did, because those straight to DVD produced two sequels and must have made a little bank. Which is what they are going to do with this idea. Madmanic999 hit it right on the nose.

The movie is based on the 70's, 80's trend of a grindhouse, right? So why not the same aspect with the old fashioned way for VHS. Of course, today it's DVD. It's not only a marketing move, it's part of the idea. They're exploiting the exploit.

It's basically a fake movie on fake movies. So why not go further with one of the other fake movies? (even though movies are entirely fantasy anyways, I know), you know what I mean. Rodriguez and Tarentino don't need the direct to DVD standard, their films have pretty much been on the success level.

so again, in redundance, this direct to DVD (once known as Direct to VHS), is part of the idea behind the film.

Usually I run from anything that is direct to DVD, but somehow this has the smell of a great concept.

I have a been question.

Who the hell gave the greenlight for the Grindhouse movie in the first place? It looks like one of the worst movies ever.
