Director Alexander Talks PUNISHER

All along, director Lexi Alexander has been up front with online media and fans about her excitement with leading Punisher: War Zone. Earlier this year, she went to SHH's forums and answered quite a bit of questions and feedback about the comic vigilante. Same goes for updating her official blog, which she has done yet again in response to the first trailer released last week. In the latest update, she tells us she's listening to our feedback to the first trailer, which I'll put the trailer down below, and that her amazement that they found a way to make a green trailer at all with the violence she has in store.

Here's what she had to say.

Wow, I was psyched and surprised to see the trailer, I had no clue it was coming out so early.

I’m also blown away that there is such a huge reaction to it. The good, the bad, I love it all. I’ve been getting emails
from all over the world and heard from friends I’ve known in the Karate and Kickboxing circuit whom I haven’t spoken
to in years. I’m starting to realize how huge The Punisher fan base is.

I’m not sure what kind of impression I would get from this trailer if I didn’t actually know the film. I am utterly impressed,

though, they managed to find that much PG rated action footage at all. It had to be a challenge to cut a trailer from our
action stuff without showing any gore and blood.

I’ve been told that you can’t even show heads blowing up in red-band trailers. I hope that’s not true because that would
suck. It’s weird to see Castle shoot all those bullets and not see the thugs who are catching them. That’s the best
fucking part about it!!!

I’m very happy that the hardcore Punisher fans recognized the lines taken directly from the comic books (all credit goes
to Ray Stevenson for that), and that MAX fans appreciated the color theme that was also directly copied from the books.

Yes …don’t expect this Punisher to be set in an ultra-realistic world. Every director has to make a call on the vision
and style of a film and putting The Punisher in a realistic and gritty setting would be like having Det. Vic Mackey of
THE SHIELD run around with a big ass skull on his chest, or Ray Liotta’s character in NARC suddenly go: “Hey, I think
I just saw a guy whose face looks like a Jigsaw puzzle.” Ha, ha.

Real crime stories and comic books are two different worlds for me. It was my first priority to please The Punisher comic
book fans and with all the respect to two wonderful actors, I wasn’t trying to become a member of the Dolph Lundgren or
Thomas Jane fan club. This film is about the mythology of FRANK CASTLE, it is ultra violent and it will look not a little,
but a lot like this.

Punisher: War Zone will hit theaters Dec. 5, 2008.

I definitely appreciate Lexi's attitude towards the making of this movie and how up front she is with the fans. Some people knocked the trailer, but I think if it is half as good as her enthusiasm towards making it, it will be a pretty damn good flick. Damn, it opens on my birthday. Cool.

pony, agree with all that. I liked the trailer and said on the first thread that they hadn't shown us anything yet and going by what she says it's true. I'm really looking forward to this, especially because is based on the Max series which just fucking rocks. I also love that last paragraph, please the comic book fans(me) and fuck TJ and Lundgren. Although I liked those movies I think this will be the definitive Punisher.

I enjoyed it too. She's definately been very upfront and keeping tabs on things about everything going on outside the movie esp with the fans.

I think it looks awesome very gritty and dark Steveneson looks brutal. He resembles The Punisher alot more then Dolph, Or Jane even tho they did decent jobs. Ray's got the look down.

There will always be that diehard core of fan boys who will hate what they are seeing but wait till we get some more looks. This was just 1 teaser. So far so good.

Can't wait Lexi !

I wasn't impressed with the trailer at all. If I based going to a movie on my reaction to a trailer I wouldn't be going to see the new Punisher film. I like Stevenson, look forward to a hard "R" Punisher and I like how "up" the director is on the film, but I thought the trailer was awful.

I wasn't crazy about the trailer, but I'm interested to hear her perspective on the movie. I want to go back now and re-watch it with that in mind (and without previous expectations). I also thought it was interesting that she knew nothing about the trailer coming out. I would have thought a director would be integral in putting a trailer together.

I'm really looking forward to a Redband trailer. I want to see heads blowing up and the thugs catching all those bullets, the blood and the gore. That is if we can see heads blowing up in redband trailers. I like it that she says it's hard to believe they could get enough pg action to do a trailer. Speaks to all the blood we're in for. Makes me giddy.

I thought the trailer looked really good, and as I stated in another post....the trailer for the new Indy movie made it look great, and look at the steamer we got there, so, you can't always judge by the trailer....judging from the Punisher teaser, there will be plenty of action, and if i recall correctly, the lack of action seemed to be a main complaint about the last one, sooooo,,,which is it?

fft5305 They usually aren't. Trailers are up to the studios. They either hire trailer producers or use the ones they have working for them to do teasers and trailers for their movies. I believe a lot of it has to do with the publicity contract that is drawn up when the movie is being put together. I don't know if you remember but when Cameron had the studios backing him for 'Titanic' he was very explicit in making sure the publicity was toned waaaay down. He wanted the movie to grow on it's own. Though Lexi wasn't aware of a teaser being released is a bit surprising. Maybe she needs to catch up on reading her email or something.

Whiskeymovie I think you're dead on. You're always going to have people bitching about everything.
"Not enough action!"
"Too much action!"
"Not enough character development!"
"Not enough -
That kind of shit. This teaser is too short and disjointed to make a good assumption on whether the movie will suck or not. Hell, when I saw the 'Daredevil' trailer it looked dark and gritty, but look what happened there. Then you have the flip side. I thought the trailers to 'Rambo' were "typical" from the previous mind-numbing 80's style action sequels. Turns out the movie was more, way more. I'm looking forward to this. I've only read about Punisher in comics when the character crossed paths with the ones I regularly read, so I don't have any expectations as to the MAX series or the original. I liked Thomas Jane and thought that he fit the type of Punisher that was created for that peticular film. Was he true to the comic character? Maybe not. But he was true to his character that was put in front of him. This type of passion and openness from a director is refreshing.

FINALLY!!!

This really looks like the REAL Punisher should be, the MAX version. The general Marvel U Punisher isn't what he should be. garth Ennis has really defined to the original core of what the Punisher should be, was and ever will be (thanks Hitman). The fact the this director is bringing that idea to the screen shows she really gets what the Punisher is really all about.

It is sad that many people base their decisions on a 1 minute trailer but then again, we all do this at some point. the difference here is that many of us do wait until passing judgment on a movie and that is something that makes sense in my view.

Can't wait to see this.
