Louis Leterrier, director of the upcoming INCREDIBLE HULK, has discussed the film with our good friends over at Wizard Entertainment. The director discussed how he approached Ang Lee's version (he liked it), what the villains meant for him and why he included them. The production of this new Hulk has been rather quiet compared to other upcoming films like IRON MAN and PUNISHER:WAR ZONE so when Letterier decided to speak his thoughts over at Wizard, it's well worth passing along..

“It’s a fresh start because I saw there is a real fan base for Ang Lee’s movie,” said Leterrier of Lee’s ill-received “Hulk” in an exclusive interview with Wizard. “I didn’t want to offend [those fans] in any way, and also I like the movie. It was very interesting. [But] it was weaker ground to build a big franchise upon so we decided to scrap it and establish it from bases that are more comic book-based and TV show-based.”

Obviously, General Ross is the villain, so he had to be in it,” added Leterrier. “But the Abomination, Emil Blonsky, was who Marvel wanted to put in this chapter—the first chapter of our new saga—because he’s the most famous. He’s an enemy that can actually threaten the Hulk. It’s very important for me that there is a danger. When Bruce Banner is Hulk, I didn’t feel in Ang Lee’s ‘Hulk’ that there was any threat. He was invincible. So with Abomination there’s actually a monster that can, you know, kill him when he’s in the Hulk form.”

The film is based on a screenplay by Zak Penn for Universal Pictures and Marvel Studios. It stars Edward Norton, Liv Tyler(Betty Ross), Tim Roth(Emil Blonsky/Abomination), William Hurt (General Ross), Tim Blake Nelson(Samuel Stern/The Leader), Christina Cabot, Lou Ferrigno, Martin Starr and Ty Burrell(Doc Samson).

Plot Summary: "The Incredible Hulk" kicks off an all-new, explosive and action-packed epic of one of the most popular superheroes of all time. In this new beginning, scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) desperately hunts for a cure to the gamma radiation that poisoned his cells and unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk.

Living in the shadows--cut off from a life he knew and the woman he loves, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler)--Banner struggles to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his nemesis, General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), and the military machinery that seeks to capture him and brutally exploit his power.

As all three grapple with the secrets that led to The Hulk's creation, they are confronted with a monstrous new adversary known as The Abomination (Tim Roth), whose destructive strength exceeds even The Hulk's own. And on June 13, 2008, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice: accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or find heroism in the creature he holds inside--The Incredible Hulk.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK hits theaters June 13, 2008.

"and also I like the movie. It was very interesting."
Interesting is the word I use when I disagree with my girlfriend but don't wan't to offend her. I'll say Ang Lees Hulk was interesting, good?...NO, interesting sure. It was interesting how far off base a normally great director can take an established character.
I downloaded a fan edited Hulk, with mostly just the hulking out scenes, with the exception of the jumping across the dessert, and bashing a tank, I STILL can't sit through that pile of Hulk SH*T. It's like watching Shrek go on a roid rage, and the story wasn't related to anything in the comics, or even the old TV show. (Which was better than the movie even)
God Bless the re-do on this Franchise. Finally a hulk movie I can watch without staring at my watch, and yawning the whoe time.
Before I go I know I talk alot about character and story building in shows and movies, BUT FOR GODS SAKE, keep some semblance to the source material, just a little. And if there was ever a movie meant for tons of action The Hulk is it.
In summation The first Hulk Sucked BIG D*CK

I've never read the Hulk comics...my only exposure was from various cartoons and the classic TV show...so could someone please explain what was so "off base" about the first movie? I keep hearing people bash it (personally, I enjoyed it!), but I just don't see the reasons behind the negativity. Seriously...can some hardcore fans explain so I will know what all the whining is about?

You know it Ultrazilla. The first movie might not have been perfect, but did we all not get wood when you saw the Hulk toss around those tanks in the desert? The casting was great, and why Sam Elliott is not coming back as General Ross is beyond me. You don't get better casting than that (sorry William). Just more action please. Hulk smash.

first, we have the comics, and comics are books, so everyone has is own point of view. Second we have the TV series, with lou ferrigno, we can t talk about it but back in the old days,, it was ok, and Ang lee version. Nothing in the middle. I think it was a nice moove from producer to choose someone with a very different background as ang lee. I think about Tim burton, that s kind of choice match very good with the comics univers, that s why the best comics adaptation always come from artist, and the worst movies of the genre come from casual action movie director...I am afraid about the coming Hulk....

Just because Ang Lee's version wasn't a giant @$$kicking smash-a-thon people gotta knock it. I thought it was far and away the most intelectual comic movie we've seen (prior to V for Vendetta) and conveyed that aspect of the hulk. There is WAY more to the character than blowing sh!t up.

It sounds like the new movie will be more 'Hulk Smash' and i'm down w/ that. But the first movie deserves props for trying to elevate the genre above spidey angst and snikt

oh and those cuts early in the film, that gave a sense of moving from panel to panel. genius. argue against it all you want but you're wrong

I liked Ang Lee's film. The Hulk is one of Marvel's most maleable icons. He has been used for so many scenerios and presented with so many personalities that it is very difficult for us to come to a consensus as to how he should be portrayed.

This story is prefaced with a picture from a 'what if' story. I think there was a dictator Hulk in another story. Strange that even this site doesn't show a photo of a version of him as we have know he looks. Personally, I liked Joe Fixit...

Currently, he is a space traveling Spartacus with a madon against the world's heroes. This story is the Hulk's big story event of the year and even here, the fans aren't impressed. But even so, if a casual reader of comics saw this story and bought it, they would have to accept this storyas it is without knowledge of the complete backstory of this tale. I do not know what that was, but I did read the main series and accepted what I read. I have no clue who the Sentry is, but I had to accept this character as much as whatever it was that Nick Nolte became..... the Absorbing Man.

Truth be told, The Hulk has been presented in so many ways and personalities that I defy anyone here to tell me what the true Hulk is?
Grey or green? Verbal or mute? Brutal or intelligent. Does he live like a beast in the woods or in sensual luxury? Just how big is he? Can someone tell me what Hulk are we going to see this time? Is there a story(TPB) that this film will base itself upon?

A I said in the beginning, I liked Lee's film. I do agree with folks who have problems with the conclusion. Yet at the same time, when I see Nolte try to induce rage opposite Bana/Banner on that stage improvising the script, I go through feelings of amazement to laughing outright at how over the top Nolte went.
The dogfight sequence worked for me too. Of the three dogs, there were the obvious choices of what would work and I am among many who know about Killer Poodles... Those suckers are viscious.

I hope they go CGI with both the Hulk and the Abomination and not the real human/body building man like the television show...I know for sure they can make the Hulk look much more realistic because the tech/programing have advanced, especially in the motion capture department...
After saying all of that, I liked the first one and look forward to the second one also...I don't know...
