According to Walt Disney and Pixar Animation chief creative officer, John Lasseter, Disney will continue its fairy tale legacy with its 2009 release of The Frog Princess.

"We're pleased to be here in the heart of New Orleans to announce 'The Frog Princess,' a great story with all the ingredients that go into making an extraordinary motion picture experience," said Disney chairman Dick Cook.  "Like many of Disney's most popular fairy tales, it has elements of magic, fantasy, adventure, heart, humor, and music. The film's New Orleans setting and strong princess character give the film lots of excitement and texture. We're also thrilled to have John Musker, Ron Clements and Randy Newman lending their talents and creative energies to this project. John and Ron helped to usher in Disney's second golden age of animation nearly two decades ago with 'The Little Mermaid,' and are on track to create the Studio's next great fairy tale adventure."

Frog Princess will NOT be produced by Pixar, but will instead go back to Disney's roots of hand drawn stories.

KJ's Take:  Sounds interesting enough, though while the New Orleans setting is admirable, I can't see it working.  I don't think this is a Pixar film, but wouldn't it be interesting to see them try and craft a story the likes of the classic Disney fair tales?

Update:  Knowing now that this is going back to hand drawn animation, you can color me interested.

There are so many people out there that would love to see hand drawn animation again. It's a shame that Disney is probably gonna market this as a gimmick to the 20th Century. I hope it's a huge success so that they will continue to do this type of animation. I'm glad the Oscar for animated short went to traditional animation instead of just handing it to Pixar again...

I agree miko that it's great to see a traditional animation film get the award, but let's not think for one minute that was because of the animation style. From what I hear the Danish Poet was a great story (have't seen it yet). But Pixar is good at what they do not because of how they animate, but what they animate. They have fantastic movies. Finding Nemo is considered one of the best all around movies made in the last ten years. When I went through film school we even reviewed the script for this movie as it was such a good story. I'm all for what ever medium gets the best stories to the big screen the quickest, and allows for the most enjoyable viewer experience. if that is hand drawn so be it, but I think as time goes on, it will be easier for studios to get computer animated movies out the door quicker, and ultimately less expensive too (that is as technology gets less expensive).
