Disney Confirms CARS 2 for Summer 2011

With Walt Disney banking a lot of cash from merchandise and tie-ins relating to their 2006 film Cars, there have been hints that we could see a Pixar sequel coming to theaters. At the Kodak theater in their exhibitor convention, the studio that a certain Mouse helped build has confirmed the sequel and said it should be hitting theaters in the summer of 2011.

At first, it was expected to be in 2012 but Disney is planning to open a new "Cars Land," a 12-acre section of their California Adventure theme park in 2011 so the sequel has jumped a year to coincide that opening.

In addition to shifting the date for Cars 2, studio also announced that it will produce a series of animated short films starring Mater and other characters from the first feature. Shorts will air on TV, including the Disney Channel, and in theaters in front of films.

"You’ll see them everywhere," Cook said. "We’re going to keep this ‘Cars’ thing going."

The first film went on to earn $462 million worldwide and has become a runaway hit in merchandise sales for the studio.

Hurray, more Disney so-so sequels. Like I don't get enough of this at work.

How about we leave Mater out of this one?

And keep the hillbillies out of the "making of " documentaries. I see enough of them in my day to day life.

Loved Cars! Can't wait for next one and tie ins. I have all the McDonald's cars on my desk at work still.

Why Cars? It was good but I'd much rather see a sequel to The Incredibles. Where's the sequel for that?

Aside from Toy Story, Cars is the first pixar sequel we get? Is it going to be called Trucks?

I wasn't big on Cars but I'll take anything Pixar.

Pixar hasn't gone wrong yet.
But this looks like is more of a Disney push for the park and the merchandise and not so much about a story someone wants to tell but rather are being forced to come up with.
We'll see, but sooner or later they're gonna lay an egg, it's a matter of odds.

Cars 2 has been planned from just after the first one came out. Yes, I'd much rather see a sequel to Incredibles, (or, for that matter, Monsters, Inc.) but in this case I'll take what I can get. Considering that they will have been working on it for over 4 years, I'm not too worried that it's going to suck.

Btw, rumor says it will be set on the Formula One circuit in France.

Agreed! I'd rather see Incredibles 2. But, Pixar has yet to misfire, so I'll be there.

Here is another vote for Incredibles 2 - I have to say that after Ratatouille and maybe Wall-E, Incredibles was Pixar's finest.
