National Treasure: Book of Secrets has been showing in theaters for 3 weeks now and all 3 weeks, the Disney flick has claimed 1st place in our Mania Box Office Report…As a whole though, the top 5 films did rather well in this first weekend of 2008. All 5 films pulled in number over 10 million and each had an average-per-showing rate above $4,400. Not to mention, the success of December receipts seem to be carrying over into early January. We have two films that have at least 171.0 million in domestic receipts and a third which already has 228.6 mil. Clearly, it’s been a successful month at the box office.

The Disney sequel lands in 1st place with 20.2 mil at the box office, pulling in that cash in 3,762 theaters, which marks an average show rate of $5,376. In three weeks of release, Book of Secrets has taken in 171.0 million domestically and another 60.3 mil overseas. While no budget is listed, it’s safe to assume a film grabbing 231.3 million worldwide in 17 days is a success for the studio.

Following in 2nd place is the biggest blockbuster of the fall season, WB’s I Am Legend. The Will Smith-vehicle cashed in another 16.3 mil this weekend in 3,648 theaters across the nation. In 4 weeks of release, WB has 228.6 million in domestic receipts and another 126.0 mil in overseas sales, which marks a worldwide gross of 354.6 mil.

As I said in last week’s report, Fox Searchlight’s Juno has been gaining steam in its limited run due to good word-of-mouth and high critical praise. This weekend was no different with the studio giving the Diablo Cody film another 906 theaters to work with. Juno lands in 3rd place 16.2 mil in receipts, which has its average per showing rate at $8,428. No budget listed for the film but it’s likely very low meaning its domestic gross of 52.0 is successful for the indie branch of Fox.

While that indie branch succeeds with the above film, Fox continued shocking themselves with the performance of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Fox executives have been quoted in the trades as being surprised about this film’s success rate and I can see why they’re a bit shocked. The film only has a budget of 60 million and yet has already pulled in 176.7 domestically in 5 weeks of release. As I said before, I can see the film doing well because of its wide demographics but the film approaching 200 mil in domestic receipts? No, I couldn’t see that one. This weekend, the film took in another 16.0 mil in 4th place, which makes for an average show rate of $4,621.

Time to talk about the only new wide release (unless you want to count Juno’s expansion), WB’s One Missed Call. The film, which has been taking a critical beating, pulled in some decent numbers in its 2,240 theatrical debut with 13.5 mil in receipts. This makes for an average showing rate of $6,037 which again, seems to be decent numbers. Again, the studio released no budget for the film but it’s safe to say it’s rather low. Whether this film will stay in the top 10 by next weekend is another story altogether…

Universal has been grabbing critical praise with Charlie Wilson’s War and to its credit; it has been maintaining steady and consistent numbers despite having overwhelming competition. The studio released this film in only 2,594 theaters and yet, it has pulled in 52.6 million domestically in three weeks of release. Not too bad at all for a film with a budget listed at only 75 mil. This weekend, it landed in 6th place by pulling in another 8.1 mil, which makes for an average rate of $3,154.

WB also continues to do decent number with their alternative programming choice of P.S I Love You. The romantic story follows in 7th place with 8.0 mil in receipts in its third week of release. In those 3 weeks, it has claimed 39.3 in domestic receipts.

Sony Revolution’s Water Horse tale landed in 8th place last weekend and it stayed in the same slot this weekend by pulling in another 6.3 million. This family adventure was a moderately-released tent pole with 2,777 theaters but it has only 30.8 mil to show for it in domestic receipts in 2 weeks of release. It just couldn’t break the top 5 against films like Alvin, Legend and NT 2.

Paramount and Dreamworks have a moderate hit on their hands with Sweeney Todd or they will have it in a few weeks. They’ve only released the genre musical in 1,249 theaters in its first 3 weeks of release and yet it has already almost made its budget back for the studios. The Depp-vehicle pulled in another 5.4 million this weekend, grabbing 9th place once again just as it did in last weekend’s report. The film has a budget of 50 mil and has claimed 38.4 million in domestic receipts. It should be noted that this film will be expanding to wide release next weekend.

Claiming last place in this box office report is the limited release of Atonement for Focus Films with a 5.1 mil tally. The production company released it in only 583 theaters in its fifth week of release so this makes for the best average per showing rate of the top 10, that being $8,789.

Not much to say about next week…What do you think, guys. Can an Uwe Boll film like his Dungeon Siege Tale get respectable numbers if said film is hitting 2,500 theaters? We have a Veggie Tales film hitting theaters, a limited-publicized crime-comedy and a Boll film slated for next week.

We may just have NT2,  Legend, Juno and Alvin continuing their respectable runs next weekend as well. Paramount and Dreamworks has said they plan to expand Sweeney Todd on January 11 but we don’t know the exact amount of prints getting added so it’s hard to guess how much that film climbs with the expansion. The Bucket List is also getting a big expansion next weekend by being added in 2,800+ theaters.

I'm happy for NT2. Alvin dropped a bit didn't it. I just can't see myself paying money to go see In the Name of the King. I mean Uwe Boll's record sucks. Even though I like the actor, as I watched him in the adds I noticed the lines he was delivering were aweful. And it's like a LOTR wanna-be. I might have given it a chance with a different director, but I'll save my money.

Me and my friends are gonna have an after hours screening of in the name of the king at the movie theatre i work for, and we will be sure to be loaded and ready to laugh at the incompetence That's uwe boll.. It'll be like our own mst3k show... And speaking of turds, how about that AVP franchise? I think its safe to say that its dead and ready to be forgotten
Hobbs 1/6/2008 3:18:12 PM
I agree about name of the king. No interest and as far as AVP. Yup I think its dead, both movies were stupid but the 2nd one was better and making less money, go figure. Probably because of the "R" rating I'm guessing or people were so turned off by the first one they don't want to bother with this one.

I have too much fun with Uwe Boll films. I'll probably see it. How bad can Jason Statham, Ron Perlman and Burt Reynolds act? We shall see! Juno, saw it today, was excellent. Highly recommend it.

Well I guess National Treasure's box office for Disney, it officially means we'll be getting "International Treasure" like Nic Cage wanted. I caught Juno this weekend, it was alright, had some funny lines. Worth checking out. Michael Cera's character was kinda stupid, I guess I expected Cera to have a bigger role in film. LOTRSUXS, I wouldn't be 2 sure about AVP being dead, if I'm not mistaken, Mania had an article last week or so and it showed the movie was doing decent with it's foreign box office, so for good or bad, we might get a 3rd one yet.
LOTRSUXS 1/6/2008 3:57:20 PM
AVP:R. Domestic box office=37 million dollars.. Foreign box office =16 million dollars.. Total box office take=53 million dollars .. Yeah i say its a flop
ultrazilla2000 1/6/2008 4:49:07 PM
AVPR is definately flopping in theathers, but it will make it's budget back and then some on DVD. I caught it yesterday, and thought it was ok. Some nice action, but it was too dark, had some lame characters...and not sure exactly where the Predalien reproductive procedure came from! No matter how odd the movie was, I still thought it was better than either of the National Treasure turds. Those movies are so generic in every aspect, how can they do so well???
LOTRSUXS 1/6/2008 5:03:10 PM
National treasure is Generic in every aspect? As opposed to avp? Lol!.... Anyways, i agree that turdfest will make its money back on dvd sales, but that means that if indeed they make a third movie, that one might go straight to dvd then...
DarkJedi 1/6/2008 5:16:34 PM
Just to clarify..AvP landed in 11th place for this weekend. The trades have pegged the budget for this film at 35 million so it has made its money back and still has quite a few international markets to go..
hanso 1/6/2008 5:22:19 PM
So a third one is coming winter of 09?..lol. Hey Dark Jedi, when is 27 dresses coming out, i thought it was on the 11th?
