The Hollywood Reporter says that screenwriter Elizabeth Hunter has been hired by The Walt Disney Company to write the script for
LAFIYA, a new animated feature film. Details on Disney's new cartoon are very scarce but the
Reporter has learned the film's main character is a girl and that the action takes place in Africa.
The news is welcome for animation fans who have been wondering what the House of the Mouse has been planning for its animation future. Right now there are two traditional animation Disney films nearing completion and getting ready for release,
BROTHER BEAR and
HOME ON THE RANGE. Inside sources have told us both projects have undergone extensive creative changes during their development process, with the latter pushed back until 2004 and the former targeted for fall 2003.
LAFIYA is a new project not heard of before, joining other possible Disney animated movies such as
ANTOINUS and
THE THREE PIGS. Rumor has it that a
CHICKEN LITTLE movie is also in the early stages of development at Disney and may be ready for release by 2005.
