DISNEY Stops The Sequel Syndrome

Oh, this bit of news cheered me up this morning. Up until now all I've been coming across is comedy film news. Putting news about upcoming comedies is a bit of a stretch on Mania. Sure, some news on comedies could be published now and then if the subject material of the comedy is somewhat genre specific but bland basic comedies? Not worth mentioning a lot of the time.

Still, while sifting through the comedy news...This came down the news wires.

Disney has publicly announced they will stop doing the straight to dvd sequels that has been their habit the last decade or so. You know what I'm talking about here, Maniacs.

Their recent habit of butchering founder Walt Disney's vision with sequels like The Lion King 1 and a Half, Lady and The Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure, Bambi II, Snow White and The 23 Dwarves (doesn't exist but I bet some genius was thinking of it.).

It seems that perhaps Pixar is making an effect on Disney's decision making skills as of late. The co-founder Steve Jobs of Pixar routinely told the public about their embarrasing sequels as of late. Then again, the fact that I'm going to mention here that Pixar and Disney are officially focusing on making 2009 the set year of Toy Story III a bit of ironic twist to it all.

Still, it can only be good news for those of us who remember the classic Disney era and have to endure through these occasional loosely based "sequels" hit the market in our adult years.

Pixar's Ed Catmull and John Lasseter will now head up the DisneyToon offices.

Good, this bit of news improved my morning already. Now perhaps, a news story about a genre specific comedy will hit the wires. Or hey, here's a thought...How about a bit of movie news about something other then a comedy. Hah.

I could care less either way. They can pump out or not pump out as many sequels as they want. Those who want to watch them can, those who don't amazingly can just pass over them. I have seen plenty of sequels to classic films. Some I have enjoyed, some I hated. But never has a sequel 'tarnished' my enjoyment of the original film that I enjoyed.

I didn't bother with most of those sequels. Only Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 and Little Mermaid 2 were worth it. The others were just a cheap money grab.

My kids seem to enjoy them so I don't care either way.

My kids loved all those, so I guess I'm dissapointed, since that means now I'll just have to wait longer till they get to DVD as they'll hit theaters first.

It doesn't mean they aren't gonig to stop making crap sequels, it just means they will release them at the movies first.

now they need to stop making crap sequals to their movies that appear in theaters (namely POTC 2 & 3)

Actaully this is not the whole story, not sure why a lot of info was left out. A few studio heads watched a roughcut of 'The Tinkerbell Movie" and said that it was garbage. They soon scrapped that movie and another sequel. Actually, I am GLAD this has happened. I was getting sick of the damn sequels!!! By the way, speaking of Pixar, here is a sneak peak at WALL-E: http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/walle/ What is up with Mania? They are way behind in breaking news!

I'm 100% behind this decision. Disney's name was getting tarnished because it was obvious they were whoring themselves out to make a quick, easy buck from the moms at Walmart being screamed at to buy the latest sequel. I watched Tarzan and Jane with my kids after it came out - thankfully a rental, not a purchase - and I was appalled at the quality. *I* could have made a better movie than this. It was a third-rate movie that appeared more like a bad Saturday morning cartoon (actually two patched together very poorly). After watching this, I refused to watch another straight-to-DVD release of a Disney sequel. So this decision is a very good one. Bringing in Pixar to run things was the smartest decision they could have made. Their movies will receive proper treatment now that they have smarter people in place.

Not a Disney fan, neither is The Boy, so no big deal to us. The sugary originals didn't appeal to me as a kid, so the sequels didn't have much of a reputation to tarnish in my household.
