The Walt Disney Internet Group looks to launch its a massive multiplayer online game based on the PIRATES franchise very soon.

In case you hadn't already read or heard, the game is called PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN ONLINE and will feature open-sea challenges in a virtual world in which players build their own stylized characters, form pirate communities and embark on ship- and land-based treasure hunts.  In addition, games can "play cooperatively or competitively, it all starts with character creation. Players begin with a basic silhouette, which can be enhanced with a kit full of parts forming millions of combinations of shapes, colors and clothing. They impart traits to their fictional pirates, like ethnicity, sex and age. Accessories (eye patches, peg legs, tattoos and scars) provide more detailed characteristics." It will be capable of supporting thousands of online players simultaneously. Also, players will be able to chat offline once they join a band of pirates and to create their own Web pages displaying their character's picture and those in their pirate group along with game stats and leader boards.

This is a subscription based game and costs $9.95 a month. No offical launch date has been set just yet, but it has been previewed for a few gaming sites. Click here to check out the site and/or to sign up for e-mail reports.

I wish I could say I was surprised. It seems like this is the new gimmick. If a movie is successful, make a TV series, a comic book and MMORPG out of it. There are so many of them out there already, I don't know how they sustain. There can't be that many people playing that many games simultaneously, can there?

An odd factor with MMO's that is not the same with almost any other game is that you really can't be playing more than one at once, not really.

Some people, I am sure, do indeed play several - but my point is, more so than normal games (with 10-40 hours of gameplay, average), one MMO really prevents playing another. By their very nature they are designed to keep you playing them for a long, long time - and for long periods at a time - thus preventing you from trying new and spending time on others.

With traditional RTS, RPG, Adventure or FPS games you play a scenario / level / battle / whatever and then you can switch games without anyone else "passing you by" because the game stops when you stop. Also you end up finishing that RPG or FPS adventure and, ignoring multi-player for a moment, the game is done. Maybe you play it again, maybe twice more if it was really fun and open-ended, but most people move on to the next game.

With an MMO, the only real comparison is maxing out a character's level and then starting a new MMO - but that takes far longer than finishing the story mode of your traditional RTS or FPS.

I've been wanting a sailing/pirating MMO for years now, and I'd hoped that Koei would release their Uncharted Waters Online here in the States.

When it became evident that that wouldn't happen, I looked to Flying Labs' Pirates of the Burning Seas, which should be out in the next few months.

PotBS looks great, but I feel sorry for those guys now, because they'll probably fall into obscurity now with a PotC MMO. :(
