As expected with Walt Disney’s expansion of The Princess and the Frog, the studio has jumped into first place cashing in on the family-focused month. Their long-awaited return to feature 2D animation grabbed an estimated $25.0 million over its first three days of wide release to increase their overall domestic tally to $27.8 million. The animated fantasy grabbed another $7 million from 1,486 foreign theaters. While New Moon still won the overall foreign race, “Princess” did finished at No. 1 in Mexico and Venezuela and opened at No. 2 in Germany ($2.8 million from 544 screens) and finished at No. 5 on the weekend overall.
Warner Bros. Pictures continues with their incredible success on The Blind Side, with the Sandra Bullock taking down the 2nd place spot. The film grabbed another $15.4 million on 3,388 theaters to increase their domestic cume to $150.2 million after four weekends of release. Great numbers for a film which reportedly cost only $29 million to produce.
Warner Bros. also has the 3rd place spot with Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial effort Invictus debuted in 2,125 theaters over the weekend and taking home $9.0 million as a result. Hard to say whether it will reach its $60 mil price tag but Eastwood’s films tend to gain momentum after their release through word of mouth.
Following in 4th place is The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which also won the foreign box office race for the fourth weekend in a row. Domestically, it took down another $8.0 million in the states while also nabbing another $22.3 million from 9,163 screens in 66 markets, raising its offshore cume to $358.7 million. The latest weekend results on both sides of the pond has the film grossing $626 million worldwide after 24 days of release. Those numbers are set against a budget of only $50 million.
Taking down the 5th place is the steady release of A Christmas Carol. Disney continues to hover between 4th-5th every weekend with their holiday-focused feature film and this weekend was no different, with the latest Zemeckis motion-capture film earning another $6.8 million. The film has a domestic gross of $124.4 million and a foreign take of $118.2 million, making for a worldwide cume of $242.6 million. The budget is listed at $200 mil.

And now Maniacs, it’s time for Avatar. We know who will be winning the box office next report. The question on everyone’s minds is: “How much?”
There’s been a widely discussed online debate on the price tag associated with James Cameron’s latest action-adventure. Some sources place his film in the range of $500 million while others still maintain it on the low end of $250-300 million. If those numbers can be considered “low end.”
Given these numbers, it would seem natural that the studio would release the film on Wednesday (Tuesday at midnight) but that doesn’t seem to be happening. The date is still set for Friday December 18, 2009 (with Thursday midnight shows).
How much cash do you see this film taking in its first three days of release?
Will it beat The Dark Knight’s three-day opening weekend record of $158.4 million? If not, can it take Spider-Man 3’s $151.1 million or The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s $142.8 million?
Sound off below!

Didn't see anything nor was I interested in anything other than AVATAR this comin week

I highly doubt that AVATAR will vie for a record opening weekend other than I-Max records but not overall records.

Keep in mind that in the history of history only ONE non-sequel has ever breached the 100mil mark opening weekend and that was the Amazing Spider Man, an American icon

I however I'm predicting 120mil opening weekend. I know I'm projecting my enthusiasm to the general public. Most sites seem to be predicting around 70 but I gotta believe that movie fans have to be intrigued and curious enough to want to see this opening weekend as it will be a landmark movie and a cultural phenomenon opening the door to a new age of movie making, miracle cures, peace on earth , etc etc

Plus we can't overlook the fact that 3D and I-Max are pricier tickets. So even if the turn out is low that should make up a bit for it.

Word of mouth, if the initial response is a sign, should be strong and long legs is really what AVATAR needs to justify the highly anticipated sequels

Wow this article sure is sugercoating a lot, I mean Princess and the Frog might be a good film and Invitus might be as well, but lets be real with a budget of $100 million and a budget of $60 million both these films are going to struggle to break even, even if they have good word of mouth, they will both have drops of around 40% next weekend meaning that Princess will be probably around $50-$55 million for its first 10 days and Invictus might below $20 million.  So the truth is that these films are suffering from a harsh lack of public interest.

As for Avatar, I am looking forward to this one but lets be real, at most it will probably make $100 million its opening weekend, but realistically I figure it will fall somewhere between $70-$85 million for its opening weekend.

Princess and the Frog was outstanding. Everything about it was top notch, soundtrack included. Randy Newman is already one of my fave artists, but he did a hell of a job on this soundtrack.

Dear haters,

If the reviews for Avatar are any indication then it is clear that James Cameron just bitch slapped you, took your money and your car. He drove your car up to your girls house and picked her up for a lovely nice night on the town. Cameron then used the money he took from you to pay for a 5 star hotel where he proceeded to perform an Angry Pirate on your girl.

Sucks to be you guys.

Sincerly,

H

Well football was very kind to me.   So i'm cashing in my winning tickets tommorow and pre-purchasing my Avatar tickets for my 4 buds.

I'm suprised to see how high the budget for the Princess and the Frog is.  Is that really what animated family films are at now.....Unreal.  It may....just by a bit make it's budget but not by next week.  Maybe come the xmas break with kids and parents off.  Thank god after Pkanet 51 my little guy hasn't been interested in movies at all.  Although as we were watching Simpsons he saw the Sherlock Holmes commercial and asked what movies that was!  I was shocked but I told him a 5 year old can't see that movie.  Maybe on DVD.

I do think I have a mancrush on RDJ now.  I havent really even seen the movie yet and I think Sherlock Holmes is more awsome than ever.

Bryzarro 12/13/2009 5:52:41 PM

Oh and Avatar will come out $170 Mil opening weekend.  Just my guess.

dawntreader 12/13/2009 6:08:53 PM

Wow.

i never thought of myself as "pro-avatar" so when i saw the estimates you guys are throwing out as low as they are i am wondering who is the avatar hater?

i was thinking that with all the hype, the directors history of film making, the metaphysical clap trap in the plot, the dances with wolves similarities and the sci fi aspects that this movie was going to make at least $200 mill in its opening.

i guess i would want to know, how many theaters is the movie opening to and how long is the run time?

JarrodSarafin 12/13/2009 6:19:26 PM

Dawntreader,

Avatar's run time is 2 hours and 40 minutes in length. At the moment, theater distribution is marked at 3,300 plus but that's going to go up by Friday. Probably past 4,000 conventional theaters and make it much more theaters with IMAX 3-D distribution.

As far the budget debate, I wouldn't put too much stock in most of the speculation. I really don't believe the $500 mil reports...I'd say I'm one of the camp believing $250 million ($300 million with advertising). I know James Cameron can get carried away with his budgets but those $500 reports strike me as a bunch of hot air. We'll see next week what Fox officially lists their budget at.

decepticons2 12/13/2009 6:22:57 PM

Is there some trailer/comercial I am missing for avatar. I don't see it changing the face of movies as we know it. Hell it looks like four or five sci fi movies put together. If starship troopers cost 300 million it might have looked like avatar. The mech and art work looks like Aliens, and I know that was a cameron movie. But rehash isnt going to change the face of movies. Do we really believe that this is the second coming of sound or colour?

And I am not saying general public is any gauge but people just don't seem to be talking about it.Movies that seemed to be talked about by non movie goers seem to be the ones that crush box office records. As much as people hate transformers (me semi included), people were talking about the movie.

Lets be honest with the cost of 3d/imax tickets will push up the first week sales but have to dissuade repeat visits. For wife and I it costs $37 and that doesnt even include snacks.

DarthDuck 12/13/2009 6:26:55 PM

My IMAX theater isn't getting Avatar.  So just be warned, there were apparently a limited number of prints.  I am super pissed but I still gotta see it, even if I can't see it in IMAX.
