A potential summer tentpole project has been brought by Walt Disney Pictures for somewhere in the neighborhood of half-a-million dollars.
KING OF THE GODS is a new take on the Greek god Zeus before he became the king of Mount Olympus; in this story Zeus is still a young man who must defeat his father, the evil Titan Cronus, if he is ever to stand on his own. The project is envisioned as a potential trilogy of films, with the first picture setting up the rise and eventual kingship of Zeus, the second following how Zeus and the other Greek gods and goddesses rule over mankind, and the third movie chronicling the fall of the gods through their arrogance and zest for power.
The idea was thought up by screenwriter Sid Quashie and pitched to Disney through Mayhem Pictures which will produce the film. Involved as producers are A.J. Marcantonio, Gordon Gray and Mark Ciardi. Marcantonio is credited as having come up with the story idea with Quashie.
The film will be live-action and use CGI elements to create the gods powers and the mythological creatures that inhabit their realm. Quashie will now cash his check and begin writing the screenplay immediately, or maybe first after socking away some money into his 401k (that's understandable.)
Quashie wrote an screen adaptation of
THE BOSTON STRANGLERS for Paramount in 2002 and
A TASTE OF POWER, an HBO project about former Black Panther leader Elaine Brown.
