South African production company Distant Horizons is looking to bring back arch criminal mastermind Fu Manchu.

The company is developing a new project in which Fu Manchu will be an anti-hero who fits in with a more socially conscious world and that addresses the very complex multipolar world of today.

Singh told reporters, "We will reinvent Fu Manchu as an anti-hero who fits in with a more socially conscious world and that addresses the very complex multipolar world we all live in today. We have already begun to discuss Fu's rebirth with a number of exciting talents in Hong Kong and mainland China."

Anant Singh, Brian Cox, Harry Alan Towers and Maria Rohm will produce.

I read this article and for some reason the word "redundant" came to mind. Hmm?

I am surprised they are not calling this racist yet. Everybody plays the race card these days.

Well, as long as actual Asians play Fu Manchu, its kinda hard for it to be considered racist. It was more racist in the original due to the exploitive manner in which a non Asian actor protrayed an Asian, kinda like Blackface.

But the burning question is, will this form of facial hair styling be reborn, as well? Can you imagine your favorite film star with a Fu Manchu?

Egads!!!

It sounds from this description the character will be played as a contemporary, meaning he will probably be wearing business suits instead of the traditional Oriental robes. I imagine it would be sort of like an Asian Godfather movie. I guess it could work, but it wouldn't have the comic book style fun of the original material.

Actually, me being Asian, I find that my "race" doesn't often complain about stereotypes or anything else alot like the other minorities do. I don't know if it's because we're not uptight or what. But you hardly ever see Asians complain about anything really. Maybe it's because we're just a proud and laid back people.

Will his son, Shang-Chi master of Kung fu, be in the movie?

Actually, #7, as an Asian (half) myself, I have noticed several times where Asians are complaining about one thing or another in movies. Most recently, Japanese Americans were complaining that a Chinese actress was playing the Japanese lead in Memoirs of a Geisha. I have also seen many complaints about one-dimensional stereotype portrayals of villains and math/science nerds. Notice they just gloss over the fact that we're all great lovers? Typical Hollywood!
fft5305 5/17/2007 9:32:54 AM
Btw, all the above was not to say that I think we *should* be complaining. I think people of all races should lighten up, not just with the movies, but in general. But with reference to the discussion at hand, they're just movies, people!
