D.J. Caruso dream casts 'Y: The Last Man'

'Eagle Eye' director D.J. Caruso talked to UGO Movie Blog about his new film, but also provided copious commentary on his planned adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn's acclaimed comic 'Y: The Last Man'.

Caruso said they'd just turned in a new draft of the screenplay to Warner Bros and their waiting to hear back. With the planned release being 2010, the clock is running. We've long heard that Caruso wants to use his 'Disturbia' and 'Eagle Eye' leading man, Shia LaBeouf as the lead in this movie. He also confirmed he'd "definitely" use a real monkey for the role of Ampersand.

When asked about the rumor that Alicia Keys would play 355 in the film Caruso said, "Well, she’s actually not a bad choice.  She’s definitely not a bad choice.  She’s definitely someone to consider.  I thought she did a really cool job in the Carnahan movie ('Smokin’ Aces') which was a lot of fun. "

But, Caruso also said he's trying for a 'Midnight Run' buddy relationship between Yorick and 355. "Alicia’s a great girl and everything but I have to make sure that she can handle the acting part of it."

Harder to cast is the role of Dr. Mann. "Everyone’s like ‘Lucy Liu’ or dah dah dah.  I don’t know!  It’s really hard because you want to have this...whew.  I don’t know to be quite honest...actually 711 is in this.  Do you remember 711?  She’s in our screenplay too.  So I’ve given a lot of thought to 711...but 355...I don’t know the right answer because that’s this really Stanford, MIT type of intelligence, and at the same time she’s asked to do a lot of interesting things and the whole thing with the cloning.  You really want Dr. Mann to be believable.  And believe it or not, Dr. Mann definitely is involved majorly in the first...in the beginning of this, but we don’t really get into the Dr. Mann stuff, or deeper into the Dr. Mann stuff, until, God willing, if we get into the second movie."

Vaughn's epic comic series would have to span several films. UGO asked Caruso what will be covered in the first film.

""You know it’s sort of a broad thing and a vague thing, but basically where you want to kind of get this is where we get ourselves to Dr. Mann and you get, Yorick and Ampersand, in our screenplay , sort of get separated for a while, they get back together and Yorick ends up getting sick.  That’s sort of a ticking clock.  Actually (comic writer) Brian K. Vaughn helped us come up with that.

"Basically where you really want to end is 355 and Yorick basically kind of come away at the end and everything is not Ok, and they still having now found Dr. Mann maybe in the middle of Act II, they still have a long way to go and a lot to figure out."
