We know there's a Conan the Barbarian and a Red Sonja remake on the horizon. We're now receiving news that there will also be a Thulsa Doom spin-off starring Djimon Hounsou for Dynamite Entertainment, reports Variety. The character was originally played by James Earl Jones in the 1982 film. The plan is to also release the character in his own comic series out of Dynamite's publishing company.
Plot Concept: The planned film will showcase the origins of the flawed hero and show how his road to hell was paved with good intentions. The immortal sorcerer Thulsa Doom originally appeared in the Robert E. Howard pulp story "Delcardes' Cat," published in the 1930s.
I liked this better when it was called Conan the Barbarian
Ditto what Dazzler said. I'm always down for any sword and sorcery flick as long as the production value is good. Not too many people outside of Conan fans are going to see this unless the trailer or commercials blows them away.
Djimon is awesome - I'm usually psyched to see him in whatever he plays... I'm not sure how this is going to work considering this is a small niche of people who would be gung-ho to see a project centered around this character. PLus - he's got large shoes to fill - James Earl Jones was awesome as Thulsa Doom.
Meh. I'd rather see him as Thulsa in the long-awaited Conan remake. But whatever. I may or may not check it out depending on early pics/vids. We'll see.
I not only don't want to see a movie about Thulsa Doom, I don't even want to see another Conan with thulsa Doom. They did that once. Let's try something new.
I agree with Almost - plus, once again - he wasn't a Conan character in Howard's story. He was a Kull nemesis. Thom Amon was Conan's nemesis and actually James Earl Jones should have had that name.... So if they do this film, is it in REH's Kull universe or the bastardized comic world of Conan?
I'm in total agreement with you guys. Thulsa Doom came and went, with an astounding performance by James Earl Jones. It should never be recast, but that's Hollywood for you. They'll continue to butcher Howard's work until we stand up and say "Hell no, we're NOT paying for this pseudo-Conan crap." Vote with your pocketbooks.
Hey, it worked for "Meet Dave."
