BBC AMERICA has announced that the new era of the BBC’s iconic BAFTA-winning drama, Doctor Who, will make its U.S. premiere on Saturday, April 17, 2010, soon after the UK broadcast.

Doctor Who, BBC AMERICA’s highest rated series ever, continues its tradition of rebooting with new lead actors and creative team. Matt Smith debuts as the new, Eleventh incarnation of the famous Time Lord alongside a new travelling companion, the enigmatic Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).

“Britain has a tradition of reinventing its iconic characters, like James Bond and Sherlock Holmes - and Doctor Who. In introducing the Eleventh Doctor, writer Steven Moffat is opening the show to a whole new audience, while serving fans with an exciting mix of inter galactic, time travelling adventures. We can't wait to meet his new Doctor!" comments Richard De Croce, Senior Vice President Programming, BBC AMERICA.

BAFTA-winning writer Steven Moffat, creator of some of the most frightening and award-winning Doctor Who episodes to date, takes over as lead writer and executive producer.  Writers for the new series include Richard Curtis (The Boat that Rocked, Love Actually), Chris Chibnall (Law & Order UK, Torchwood), Toby Whithouse (Being Human, Torchwood), Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock) and Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly, Hardware).

Guest stars include SAG Award winner Alex Kingston (ER, Flash Forward), Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo (The Secret Life of Bees, Hotel Rwanda) and Tony Curran (24).

Travelling both through time and space, the new series has the mysterious Doctor and Amy Pond together exploring sixteenth century Venice, France during the 1890s and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space. The first three episodes of the 13-episode series have been confirmed as The Eleventh Hour, written by Steven Moffat, The Beast Below, also by Moffat and Victory of the Daleks by Mark Gatiss.

Moffat’s work includes the hit comedy Coupling, the critically-acclaimed thriller Jekyll, the new BBC series Sherlock and along with Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the screenplay for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn - which is being directed by Steven Spielberg.

Check out BBC America and Mania for all the latest on the new Doctor Who.

Mania’s Take: It will be tough for new fans to think of anyone else but David Tennant in role. Matt Smith shows a lot of promise in these early trailers. Thankfully there will not be a long wait between the BBC debut and the BBC America premiere.

"Mania's Take" is my take.  The series I know is over.  I'm routing for Moffat's team and I suspect I'm going to love this season for what it is.  But it's going to feel like a whole new show to me, I think.

it looks like fun and to me it is a new show. like STNG is to the original trek

I grew up with the series being shown on PBS and to me Tom Baker is The Doctor (though I really liked Tennant as well) but change is really what has kept Doctor Who around and I am willing to give the next incarnation (or the next-next or...) a chance as well.

Though he has big shoes to fill and a new creative team may be the real key to his sinking or swimming.

Give the new guy a go.  I grew up watching the original series in Australia with John Pertwee as the doctor.  I was horrified when he regenerated!  Turned out Tom Baker was my favourite Doctor.  I also watched the series though to the end in 1988 and have thoroughly enjoyed the new series.

I must admit that David Tennant now ranks with Baker as my favourite but you have to trust the people who produce the series.  They must think the new guy is a pretty good follow up to DT.  I'm just glad they revived an old favourite and made it even better.

It's wierd, I keep hearing people say the series is over without Tennant as the Doctor, without even giving Smith a look-see.  Tennant was great, no doubts about that, but how many people had the roll before him?  Show didn't tank after Patrick Troughtan or Tom Baker.  Personally, I'm not wild about Matts catchphrase (Geronimo???), but I'm willing to give him a look before making judgement.

To my defense I didn't say that the series is over without Tennant.  I said the series "I know" is over.  Maybe it's a bit pendantic, but I'm a gamer (tabletop RPGs and such) and gamers are known for that.

Ales Kingston is coming back?  Cool.  Now, if only I got BBC America...

Karas sorry you don't have BBC America.  Aside from folks like you not getting it, I'm happy that BBC America took the show from the SciFi... They really don't seem to be a good home to good Science Fiction to me.  They get lucky every once in a while (Battlestar Galactica) but then treat some gems like $5 hookers (Farscape, Dresden Files, etc.).

BBC America seems to bring the shows to the American audience sooner than SyFy ever did.  Of course it's possible that was because of the way the rights to show it were worked in their contract.

Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to the new Doctor.  I didn't like Tennet at first after I thought Eccelston had done such an amazing job... and then after a season, Tennet became my favorite Doctor.  I'm willing to give the new guy a chance.  What is he like the 10th or 11th person to play the Doctor, it's not like this is something that is out of the blue.  If you've watched enough Dr. Who, you knew this day would eventually come & will probably come again.

I kind of wish that SyFy still had Doc Who on there then maybe I can enjoy the new season in HD.  BBC America is not in HD on DirecTV.  Sucks bad.
