I'd start back at the 2005 relauch if you're a newbie. If you try watching just the Matt Smith episodes, you might not get into the show. At least for me, the last 2 seasons have been difficult to get through. Not Matt Smith's fault, I do like his Doctor, but more because of Amy Pond and the way the show become SO Amy centric last season, especially.
Usually, I introduce newbies to the series with the 2005's season 2-parter "Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances."
Bad thing about this first episode of the new season is that I felt completely lost for the first half of the episode. It's been so long since last season, that I can't recall what exactly happened last. Can't even recall the Christmas episode off the top of my head right now.
