DOCTOR STRANGE on Dvd & Blu-Ray Tuesday

It can be easy to forget sometimes that Marvel and DC are releasing movies for their comic franchises outside of the theater medium. With so much marketing and news blitzes focusing on big budget affairs like IRON MAN, DARK KNIGHT & INCREDIBLE HULK, sometimes the other properties slip by everyone's notice because they're released on DVD format instead.

Marvel's latest adaptation, DOCTOR STRANGE, hits both Dvd and Blu-Ray on Tuesday. The screenplay was written by Greg Johnson and directed by Patrick Archibald, Jay Olivia & Richard Sebast. Lionsgate is handling the distribution of the Marvel film. It stars Bryce Johnson (Doctor Strange), Paul Nakauchi (Wong), Michael Yama (Ancient One), Kevin Michael Richard (Baron Mordo) & Edmund Gilbert (Dormammu).

Plot Summary: Dr. Stephen Strange was one of the most gifted surgeons in medicine before his hands were left shattered and useless as a result of a car crash. Spending his fortune in pursuit of a way to fix his fractured body, the dejected doctor believed all was lost until the Ancient One offered him hope and healing in Tibet.

Training mind, body and soul with the Ancient One and his pupils, Doctor Strange’s scope, power and compassion grows as he steps closer to his mystical fate. But to fully embrace his destiny and protect the worlds of magic and reality, Strange must face betryal, death and the emergence of Dormammu.

Can't wait...the animation looks great!!!

I saw the preview for this on the Iron Man animated DVD. It looked fantastic. I can't wait for this to be released.

Here's my take on these animated releases: The theatrical releases, while fantastic, are created for a wider audience. Nothing wrong with that at all.

These animated deals, though - Doc Strange, Ultimates, Death of Superman - are created for the fans of those books. They tend to be closer to the comics in both content and style.

As my compatriots said, I can't wait!

Put me in the "can't wait" camp.
I went to Best Buy last week looking for it, got upset when I couldn't find it, returned to my comic store and flipped until I found the ad - the 14th! Grrrr.
Not long to wait now, though. This looks great!

I've collected all of the Marvel Adaptations starting with the Ultimates, and I have to say that with each release the animation has gotten better and better...can't wait for this one, because from what I saw on the end of Iron Man...this is going to be pretty cool.

Who is the target audience for the animated movies? Kids? Adults? A little of both? I was debating buying them due to the fact that I didn't want to watch a full length cartoon written for kids. What's the word fellas?

First of all, don't be afraid of watching something just because it is animated. 'Cartoons' started as animated shorts for adults. Animation is safe for adults. As for any of the crap that they do have out there that is directed at children these days (whatever happened to good Saturday morning cartoons anyway?) if any of that was directed towards Marvel or DC then there would be a riot. But to be more specific, no these films are not directed towards kids. In Iron Man there is a scene with Tony in a hot tub with a woman and scenes later on were definitely a little too suggestive or revealing for children. The storyline itself is more mature than what you'd find in the wasteland of today's crappy animation.

HunterRose,

DOCTOR STRANGE is rated PG-13. So it's not as if this movie is a G-Rated Disney movie...

Lionsgate and Marvel are working with a more serious formula.

All four of the recent Marvel titles (2 Avengers, Iron Man, and Doc Strange) are PG-13, and I know that's the target rating for the Death of Superman.

The real question isn't "adult or kid" on these, because that same question can be applied to the source material. Good storytelling is for those who appreciate good storytelling, and the bias against certain media (comics, animated, etc) is just another way that shows some people just 'don't get it.'

If you're a fan of these comics, as I said in an earlier post, these movies are intended for you. They're more targeted to that fanbase than the wide-release theatrical runs which have to make the stories a little more 'mainstream' to get their money back.

Hey WarCry Ultimates 1 and 2 were very, very, loosely based on the comics. They were actually a little dissapointing in the way they strayed from the books. Trust me when I say that Marvel made sure that these movies are very kid friendly and that they don't give a dam about the true fans that support the books like Ultimates. Cannabalistic, rapist Hulk? They would never put that in a cartoon. I wish but, it would never happen.
