The gang’s all here for the last hurrah as Dollhouse begins the countdown to its final episode.

Amy Acker returns at Dr. Saunders, Summer Glau returns as Bennett Halverson, Reed Diamond returns as Dominic, Miracle Laurie returns as November, Philip Casnoff returns as Clive Ambrose (erroneously named as Alberts in a prior review due to the reviewer’s bad hearing). All that’s missing is Alexis Denisoff’s Sen. Daniel Perrin, Alan Tudyk’s Alpha, and Keith Carradine’s Harding.

With all these recurring guest stars in addition to the main cast, the episode didn’t seem crowded.
Granted, while Victor (Enver Gjokaj) and Sierra (Dichen Lachman) had one scene, it was significant. It would have been nice to learn how Dominic got out of the Attic, a place from which there is no escape, but that’s forgivable. Maybe the next episode will say how.

Tim Minear is an excellent writer/director. He wrote some of the best episodes of Angel. It seems he works best when there’s flashbacks involved. In “Getting Closer,” the mystery of Echo’s original personality Caroline (Eliza Dushku) deepens. Flashbacks of Caroline from previous episodes, including the pilot, were shown. They were more like pieces to a puzzle that were finally put into the right places.

Turns out Caroline is not evil, but “an idealist” in the words of Adelle DeWitt (Olivia Williams). A student at Tucson Institute of Technology, she’s more of a radical, believing the Rossum Corporation – the Dollhouse’s parent company – needs to be taken down for its immoral, unethical, and illegal experiments on human beings. Thus, Caroline’s connection to Bennett, which was revealed a few episodes back, now makes sense. As does Bennett’s hatred of Caroline (she’s responsible for Bennett’s left arm being useless).

Echo needs Caroline to tell everyone who Rossum’s silent, secret partner is. Unfortunately, the disk with Caroline’s personality is missing. The only way to bring Caroline back is by using the backup disk Alpha downloaded her personality on, but that’s been damaged. Enter Bennett. Echo promises Bennett that if she brings back Caroline, she can have a free shot on her, thus ensuring Bennett’s cooperation.

It’s cute to watch Topher and Bennett flirting. “Y’know, I’ve always had a crush on you, even when I thought you were a dude,” Topher confesses in what has to be one of the funniest quotes from the entire series.

More revelations are also shown. Turns out Paul (Tahmoh Penikett), who is now a Doll but has been downloaded with his original personality, lost his connection to Echo when Topher (Fran Kranz) implemented Active technology within his brain. It was either that or remain a vegetable for the rest of his life. Speaking of Topher, he turns out to be a human being after all, telling Ivy (Liza Lapira) not to become like him.

There are two big WTF moments. Dr. Saunders turns traitor and blows Bennett’s head off with a single gunshot. That had you jumping out of your seat.

While you’re wrapping your mind around that, Rossum’s secret, silent partner is revealed in the flashback. Turns out (SPOILER ALERT) it’s Boyd (Harry Lennix), the Dollhouse’s security chief, Echo’s former handler, and Dr. Saunders’ love interest. As Echo becomes Caroline again, Boyd is standing over her.

It’s a damn shame that back-to-back episodes of Dollhouse aren’t shown anymore because it’s going to be a long week to see what happens next. Why FOX cancelled this show boggles the mind (maybe the Rossum Corporation got to some of the executives) because these past several episodes were definitely worthy of being aired during the November Sweeps. This series may be ending in two episodes, but it’s at least going out in style.

Fully agree withe review and the grade. When Doc Saunders shot Bennet in the head, I was like  "Holy Shit!!" At first I thought she did it because she hd thise serious anomosity towards Topher and wanted to hurt him. Then, when they revealed who the secret partner was I was like "Holy $hite!" again. This show has just gottne better and better with each episode. Its a shame its the end.

When Saunders walked in, I thought she was either going to destroy the drive that Bennet was working on or kill Bennet. It was just the way Acker was standing there with her hands behind her back, and she was the only active not imprinted with her original personality. But other than that, the episode was fantastic. The reveal of the secret partner was definitely not seen coming, and it's going to be interesting to see if how things pan out and if Whedon will keep to the nasty future he showed us in the unaired final episode of Season 1.

was i the only one who knew saunders was going to shoot bennet as soon as she walks in? joss whedon loves to tease romance, give us romance, and then tragically tear it out of our hands. re: every romantic relationship on every whedon show. buffy boffs angel? bam! he's evil and sent to a hell dimension! willow and tara get back together? bam! tara gets shot and dies! fred and wesley finally get together? bam! fred gets evil disease and dies! Wash and Zoe get to be in a movie? Bam! Wash dies! Dr. Horrible has a sing-along-blog? Bam! Felicia Day dies! so how could no one expect bennet to die as soon as she and topher started smiling goofy at each other? and when saunders came in with her hands behind her back? what did you think was going to come out, cake and honey??

fyi, the last episode is called epitaph 2 and guest stars someone whos name rhymes with delicia fay. heres hoping fox actually shows epitaph 1 before it, otherwise the american audiences might not know whats going on.

FOX EXECS ARE PATENTLY STUPID.  The only series they havent screwed over is the Simpsons.  They Screw Joss every chance they get,  They Screw Eliza every chance they get, Dollhouse gave them a 2 for 1 screw-fest. FOX needs to be introduced to these fan sites, (I doubt if they could locate their own ass with both hands) and shown they have a market for these shows.  I liked Tru Calling, I liked Firefly, My best Friend (rest his sole) loved SPACE ABOVE AND BEYOND (another SciFi show that FOX fudged over). I wish we could save Dollhouse. It really deserves another season, it's just barely hit it's stride. (and I was hoping Felica Day might get more screen time. Felica is some nice eyecandy - Watch The Guild)

It's too bad this show found its legs AFTER it was annouced it got the axe...but I said it before, to be fair to Fox the ratings for the show were in the toilet.  I think it was rating at the very bottom since it came back for a 2nd season.

I agree with you trollman but ratings drive everything.  Look at Firefly, it got a 2nd chance on the big screen and no one went to see it thus you will never see Firefly again.

I think the reason the show is so good IS because its ending.  Although I agree that this season is on fire, I dont think the shows premise was meant to last that long.  Heck the entire sho could be told in a 2 and a half hour movie.  Im not sad to see it go but im happy that there exist 2 seasons of a good show.

ManiaHasIssues, I didn't see the gunshot coming only because I was buying that Bennett actually loved Topher.  I figured she was just using him, going along with him on fixing the wedge just so she can a) survive and b) maybe get revenge on Caroline.

Kurt, I agree almost entirely with your review, but I have to disagree that Caroline is responsible for Bennett's arm being useless.  First, Caroline didn't want to include her in her plan's to blow-up Rossum's lab.  That was all Bennett wanting in.  And when Caroline was setting the bombs and discovered the bodies in the lab she specifically told Bennett to leave and not get caught.  Caroline was even willing to take the fall for everything.  She gave Bennett her ID badge and said to tell them that she was just working late and got caught in the explosion.  And that was the only choice Caroline had at that point.  There was simply no way she was gonna be able to move that damn cement column off of Bennett's arm.  Even if by some miracle she did, the damage was already done to the arm.

I don't know about the show founding it's legs only after it was canned.  The second after of the first season (when Joss got back creative control) was pretty strong, and this season only took an episode or two to get going again.

As for the ratings issue, it's on Friday nights on Fox!  And that's where it started, which is the death knell any Fox show these days.  Put it on a Tuesday night with Fringe or something and it *might* have stood a chance.  As it stood this season, Friday had A LOT of competition from Smallville, Sanctuary, Stargate: Universe, USA's friday night line-up.  My understanding is Dollhouse was doing pretty well with it's DVR numbers but as yet, the networks aren't really using those as much.

One final note, with regards to Serenity.  The movie made it's money back at the box office.  It wasn't a runaway hit, but it was a solid film.  Hell, it only cost $40 million to make it and it looked like a movie that cost $100 million to make.  My real problem with the movie was how it was marketed.  All the trailers said "From the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel."  I'm sorry (and I love both of those shows), but that alienates a crowd quicker than anything.  It's been my experience that with Buffy and Angel you either love them or hate them.  It's rarely an in between.  And despite a large cult/fan following for those shows, that's really a small number of people when you compare it to the movie-going public at large.
