In a surprising turn of events, actor Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard in 'Iron Man 2'.

Cheadle will continue the role of Tony Stark's best bud, Jim Rhodes, who (in the comics) eventually takes on the armor and becomes War Machine, says The Hollywood Reporter.

There is no official word on the reason for the replacement but off-the-record sources say it's about money, among other things.

We love Don Cheadle and think he'll make a fine Rhodes. Still, we can't help but be disappointed by Howard's absence. He was great in the first movie. When we interviewed him at Comic-Con he seemed to have a deep affection for the comics and the character of Rhodes. He spoke about connecting with his father over the character and how he looked foward to being War Machine in a future film.

'Iron Man 2' is slated to film next year.

T.Howard is a good actor but IMO he was totally wrong for WM, his high pitch voice just didn't strike the right cord especially for a Marine. Yeah I know they changed it in the movie but he's still one of us to me. Don Cheadle wouldn't have been my first choice to replace him, he is just too soft spoken, but he is a better actor IMO. And he is looking a little older now a days. Still, can't think of who would be a better replacement off hand.

Will Smith should be War Machine!

While I love Don Cheadle, I have to second AMiSHPiRATE's "boo"... Terrance Howard was so freakin' awesome in Iron Man, at times outshining Robert Downey jr. Cheadle's good though, so I'm sure he'll make a fine Rhodey. Still, I hate it when the actor in a big role changes from film to film. I have to wonder if this is a sign of things to come for the Avengers movie? If money is really the issue, how much is it going to cost to get Downey and the rest to do a spin-off?

Will Smith as Captain America wearing the War Machine armor!

Hell yeah!!! Tired of Howard's Hollywood ass, whoring, trying 2 get an Oscar. Taking any role that came his way. Don can bring sum depth to the character...and he actually has the voice of grown man!!! He can redeem himself..Cuz, Traitor sucked!! Good show!!! Can't wait!!!

Damn. That's a shame. I thought Howard was very good in Iron Man. Cheadle is an amazing actor, but it will certainly be jarring to see Howard replaced. Meanwhile, this is the second comic book film to replace an actor during the series, right after the first film. Then again, I don't think Katie Holmes was missed too much in Dark Knight.

Too much? Try not at all. That is a surprising turn of events. I thought Howard did a good job as Rhodey. I don`t know who I would have replaced him with but Don Cheadle wouldn`t have been my first choice. I picture someone a little more square jawed and Marine looking like in the comic. Actually, if Will Smith wasn`t such a big star he would be perfect physically, but Rhodey`s character is a little more straight laced. Its Tony that tends to loosen him up. Its sad that I can`t think of many black actors that would be a good fit besides the same 4 or 5 dudes. Actually, Jamie Foxx, would have been perfect for the Rhodey role. He was really good in Kingdom. Didn`t crack one joke or smart alec remark. He can definitely play serious. Cheadle seems a little old to play Rhodey.<BR />It sucks that money had a factor in this. He`s not Downey, so was obviously not irreplaceable. For a movie like that, I would not have tried to be greedy.

While I agree with some of these previous comments, I do believe that Don is a great actor. He really, I feel, puts everything he has into the character he portrays. I am, however, disheartened about Terrence not reprising his role as WM. I just wonder what direction he would've wanted the character of Rhodey to go if he'd been in IM2? I guess we'll have to see what justice Don can do with the character.

I think Derek Luke would've been good but may look too young for the role. Since they made Rhodes such a high ranking officer. It is a shame that we can't come up with someone right off hand but I'm sure there are quality actors out there that could fill the role better, just may not be a known actor. If not how about we put the Tropic Thunder make up back on RDJ and let him play both roles.
