U.K.'s Velvet Octopus is working on a sequel to the 2001 cult film DONNIE DARKO entitled S. DARKO.

The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie's death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Daviegh Chase will reprise her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast also includes Ed Westwick and Justin Chatwin.

Ash Shah's Silver Nitrate and Newmarket Capital will produce. Chris Fisher (NIGHTSTALKER and RAMPAGE: THE HILLSIDE STRANGLER MURDERS) will direct.

Fisher said in a statement: "I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality."

Richard Kelly is not involved with the project.

The film starts shooting May 18th.

Whatever...You can't match or come close to the essence of the first movie so why try? Jake Gyllenhaal is another reason that movie was good and without him then you have,,,His sister? what the f ck how do you take someone who meant very little to that first story and make her a major player?

Well, I haven't even seen the first one yet. What can I say? Was it any good?

I picked up DD at Best Buy as a impulse buy because they were playing the trailer and I thought it looked kinda creepy. I Enjoyed it. I'm with mlaforcer... I don't know if they will be able to capture the same tone or feeling the first movie had.

I loved DOnnie Darko...I don't think anyone can capture Kelly's style.....did anyone see Southland Tales? I loved that movie, yet I seem to be like one of the few that have seen it...There is a 3 part graphic novel series that leads up to the events in the movie, so it helps if you read that first....check it out, it is awesome.

I've seen Donnie Darko like four times. I finally got it...and I don't like it. Why make a sequel to such a confusing movie?

I sorta-kinda like the first one. I dunno; after I saw the Director's Cut, the whole experience was ruined for me. And after seeing Southland Tales, I'm starting to think Kelly got lucky with the theatrical version of Darko. So I am in the camp that thinks this movie would be crappy, even with his involvement.

Donnie Darko was incredible on a TIME BANDITS level. It was confusing the first 20 times but still excellent.

The sequel idea swallows though. A better story would involve Donnie trappped in the timestream without control over where he lands. Watch the first get remade and franchised in 20 years with Jake in the Patrick Swayze role.

Southland Tales = great flick. I can see why people wouldn't like it and for the first 1/2 hour I thought I wouldn't either. Then I found the groove the movie was going for and held on for the crazy ride.

DD was great as well. I love anything that i actually have to think about to follow. Sure sometimes i like my entertainment spoonfed, but a movie that makes you think and gets better w/ more viewings, how could you not find something to love.

As for the sequal, I doubt it'll be anywhere close w/out Kelly's involvement. But I'll still add it to the ole netflix queue and see for myself, eventually.

I agree with you Sonymanswallows. But it only took me about 3 times and the pause button to work it out. ;)

This is just another lame scheme to ride the coattails of a success just to make money. How original. How could you possibly make a sequel to this? Call it 'Donnie Darko 2' when he doesn't even appear in the movie?

Some things are better left alone.

sounds like a plan to destroy the name of a great movie.
