Downey Jr, Howard Talk IRON MAN

Our good friends over at Wizard had a chance to visit the set of the recently wrapped IRON MAN film and ask a few questions towards star Robert Downey Jr(Tony Stark/Iron Man) and co-starTerrance Howard(Lt. Col. James Rhodes). Director Jon Favreau finished the shoot shortly before Comic Con 2007 in June and they're in post-production mode at the current moment.

Here's one of the questions they shot Downey's direction;

Can you talk about the wardrobe and getting into the suit?

DOWNEY: Yes. I love Stan Winston and all the guys on his team. There are several stuntmen as well and Mike Justice and these guys, and again, if Jon and I are Tony Stark, then it’s me and those fellows—my stuntmen and stand-in—who can really wind up being Iron Man, because it’s just such a massive undertaking. At first we said that we wanted to do as much as practically as possible. I came into this going, “Oh, yeah. Practically. Practically.” But it’s really tough and really great. Like, the first time you try on that suit, you could take the least macho superhero man or woman and put them in this suit, and I swear to God that for 15 seconds you would believe that any of them would destroy their nemesis. So it’s really about the long game. It’s about, how do you not have a personality meltdown in like hour seven when you kind of feel like you’ve been tarred and feathered and covered in machine parts?

I had come off doing “Zodiac” before this and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” which was a really good movie that I loved, and “Scanner Darkly” before that—all of these films are really about character and once in a while you get your finger cut off, you have a bad day or you’re wearing an ascot or something like that, and so I had really gotten used to doing these non-technically driven movies. As much as we’ve been able to in this, we’ve tried to have it feel like if Bob Altman had directed “Superman” or something like that.

As I said, they also had the chance to talk shop with co-star Howard on his role as Stark's friend & bodyguard, Lt. Col James Rhodes. Here's a sample of that interview;

What attracted you to this role?

HOWARD: War Machine, the whole idea of being able to play a superhero, so to speak. Getting able to go up in jets because the Department of Defense took me up in a T-38 and an F-16. They might let me go up in the B-1, I hurled, like everybody hurls, but all those ideas, man, that was it for me.

I have nothing productive to add... I just have to say that every time I see something about this movie it makes me happy and I could most accurately be described as a casual fan at best. Honestly, everything about this movie is full of win.

I can't wait. May can't come quick enough. This will be the movie of the summer for me.
I might go watch the rocketeer right now just to watch a man fly.

The great thing about this is it seems that
everyone is really concerned with "getting it
right," as generic as that sounds. More comic
book adaptations might do better by respecting the source material, instead of the studio attempting to recoup their invest-
ment during the opening weekend. I'm really excited next summer also.

Cool suit, good actor I think we have a good movie on our hands. I thought the Armor Wars was one of the coolest series in the Comic.

It won't bother me that it's not exactly like the comic. But I'm sure they'll get the feel right. This is just going to be awesome. When I was a kid Iron Man was so cool because I could be him. Anyone could with the suit. Where many other superheroes had these powers I'd never have.

Like chirop, I'm just a casual fan. I never really like the comic outside of his bad ass armor. But I am amped for this flick. Pretty much all comic movies have left me wanting more, and I think a big part of that has to do with the studios' choices in directors and actors. That's what has me diggin' this flick.

Robert Downey, Terrance Howard AND Jon Favreau? There could be hope for the superhero flick genre yet.

Looking good is no longer a big issue for these films anymore...
With the special effects these days and access to state of the art costumes and technology why wouldn't they... just look at FF Rise of the Surfer... looks can be deceptive... but I have my fingers crossed for this one...

The interview reads like an unedited stream of consciousness, which leads me to believe that Downey Jr is about as excited and pumped up for this role as he can get. I get the same vibe from any Favreau interview about the movie as well. I agree, almostunbiased, May can't get here soon enough! Summer of '08 will crush '07.

I never read the comics, so I will love it no matter what but how many times have a cast and director say they want to get it right, but don't. I am sure the Ang Lee thought he was doing the Hulk justice, which I actually liked, but most did not. I love Robert Downey Jr. , so I am in no matter what.

Like others, even for not having read Iron Man, I have bigger expectations for this film than nearly all I've read about recently.

Re: #2, W. C. Fields and I can think of a couple other reasons to watch The Rocketeer. ;-D
