Dragonball Z Special: History of Trunks
By Jeff Green
February 07, 2002
Release Date: December 20, 2000
Dragon Ball Z is not just anime about violence, it's anime with a story behind the fighting and as usual they prove that by showing you a what-if story of a fairly complex story line, dealing with the repercussion of time travel and the horror it produced named Cell. Here you get to see a future that never was or shouldn't have been.
Audio B: Yeah a pretty high score for a DBZ disc well that's because they actually found real bands and had them put music into the special on the dub track, of coarse you have to like glam rock because what you have here are bands like Dream Theater and Slaughter...So I only spot checked the dub and went right to the original Japanese audio which I would have done anyway.
Video B+: Finally a DBZ DVD released by Funimation that looks good! Yep the picture is very clear and much better than the Video Tape (like that's hard to do), which is why you buy DVD in the first place. I noticed only slight compression artifacting in the background but not nearly as much found in the past four DVD releases. A good solid picture that I'm sure you will all enjoy.
Packaging Rating B: Funimation put together a great cover for this release and if you have seen the VHS release you know what I'm talking about, a very solid effort on there part which would have seen an A rating from me if only they would have had put an insert in the keep case.
Menu Rating C+: The History of Trunks probably has the best menu out of the past four discs Funimation put out. There are no problems with moving the curser or selection a language, if you pick Japanese the original intro will play right into the feature itself with no flaw what so ever. This menu just didn't take with me on an overall wow factor so I only gave it a C+.
Content Rating C: Ok I like the Trunks special for what it is, a story that never was or won't happen. You get a lot of action and you get to see how this future Trunks became strong enough to just swat Freeza and King Cold like they were nothing more than flies. You get a feel for how evil the two popular androids can be and why you just love to hate them. The only problem I had was that this story just doesn't make sense on a couple levels, #1. Why is it that Gohan can't eventually defeat these two if in the past while he is a little kid he trains enough to kick Cell's ass. #2 Trunks trains and gets pretty powerful in fact they make you think he is more powerful than Gohan yet he can't defeat the androids or even mess them up for that matter...it just doesn't make sense. But on the whole this is a very enjoyable special to watch and it gives you a little insight into the character of Trunks.
There are a few little Extras on the disc, The world of Dragon Ball Z which is meant to bring you up to snuff on what's going on, and those really bad commercials they did to advertise there tapes.
