DREAM THEATER: announce new Label, new studio album and World Tour

By: Randall Larson
Date: Thursday, February 22, 2007

Roadrunner Records is proud to announce the signing of progressive metal pioneers Dream Theater. A new studio album, Systematic Chaos is due in June. Dream Theater will hit the road in support of the album for a world tour, including major festival appearances in Europe.

Since their first studio release in 1989, this US based five-piece has notched up record and DVD sales in excess of six million and headlined to audiences of 20,000. Having undertaken seven world tours across 42 different countries, Dream Theater has established a live reputation that has swept them to arena-status around the globe. They have appeared alongside acts such as Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Yes.

Recognized by peers and public alike for their advanced musical expertise, the band (Mike Portnoy, drums; John Petrucci, guitar; John Myung, bass; James LaBrie, vocals; Jordan Rudess, keyboards) has long held the ability to combine complex arrangements with unadulterated songwriting skills, the material often underpinned by riffs as heavy as anything in the Metallica repertoire.

"This album's got all of the elements we've become known for," reveals Portnoy. "The focus on musicianship, the skull-crushing riffs, the big progressive epics and the heart-wrenching melodies. We've got one of the strongest and most devoted fan bases in the world, and they should certainly be happy with the new material. By working closely with the label we hope to turn a great many new heads too."

Prior to teaming up with Roadrunner, Dream Theater was signed to a seven-album deal with Warner Music Group worldwide. The deal commenced with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Images And Words (1992), a Gold-certified US release, and concluded, in equal style, with Octavarium (2005), a Top 40 Billboard outing. In August of last year the band issued Score, a live album/DVD (recorded at Radio City Music Hall in New York), which went straight to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard DVD charts, knocking Pink Floyd from the top!

Systematic Chaos, Dream Theater's ninth studio release, arrives at a time when the band is casting a longer-than-ever shadow across the rock and metal landscape. Their influence is being acknowledged by an increasing number of contemporary, cutting-edge acts such as Stone Sour, Trivium, Shadows Fall, Opeth as their fan base continues to grow.

Touring plans will be announced shortly. Please visit

It's a pity that no one cares about music news on mania.

But hats off to the editorial stuff for bringing us us great progressive roch/ metal news on despite the absence of appreciation.

Dream Theater probably is the biggest prog group nowadays. One of their reasons of being that big was their deal with Warner Bros/ Elektra. It is true that they werent getting the necessary support for their last three albums but they were given the chance of freedom of content. The lable tried to push these guys on an album and the result was the worst of their discography: Falling in to infinity. After that there was their self produced albums wihch brought many new fans.

I would expect them to sign with InsideOut records which houses most of prog groups such as Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation, Symphony X and Shadow Gallery.

They would probably continue to be succesful in the new label too... Roadrunner is handling Opeth very well why not DT.

Anyhow back to the main subject thanks for the music news again. Please know that there are still people reading them.

This site has way to many readers for people to think that no one reads music news. It's just not something people comment on as often, which is fine.

Randall does a great job with the Music news week to week, and hopefully will continue to do so for a long time.

On a related note ... I'm working on a contest/giveaway for a Megadeth concert DVD, time for a little contest love for the Music section.

Since you are such an avid music supporter, give me your email address and I'll send you a copy.

I enjoy reading your music articles as well. I'm a huge fan of Dream Theater, Cradle of Filth, Blackmore's Night and various other progressive rock, blackmetal and classic rock acts out there.

Keep up the good work. It's a nice distraction from the mounds of film news and development hell you get on most of these sites. And this article in particular was very well written.

Ditto the above comments! Keep the music articles coming. I know there have been comments in the past about 'why is this article on this site?', but I enjoy the music news. I also find interesting what you consider to be 'notable music genres'.
Tasselhoff, I recently pulled out my 'Falling into Infinity' and found it to be better than I remembered.

I'm also glad to see some praise for Mania's music department. It shows that the editors are thinking outside the box and are willing to stretch the definition of genre fandom.

I'm also a fan of progressive music, though I tend to be more old school in my tastes - I never developed a taste for metal or metal-prog, but I'm definitely open to discovering music by new prog bands that are more in the tradition of Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, etc.
