It seems we may be getting a new pirate film in the near future, this time from DreamWorks. The trade reports that it will be based on the legendary pirate Blackbeard. Unlike Disney's fantasy themed Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, this one will be more about the life of British buccaneer Edward Teach. The screenwriter in charge is David Franzoni, who wrote Amistad and Gladiator.

Barry Josephson (Enchanted) is producing alongside motivational speaker and former Philadelphia 76ers president/co-owner Pat Croce, who wrote "Pirate Soul," a book that chronicled the golden era of piracy, which spanned 1690-1730.

Teach was Welsh. Point of clarity.

Is there an audience for this? I know I'd be there but in general I don't see people flocking to this. Are they going to make it as brutal as the legends seem to make him out or are we going to see things from his point of view. Either way these type of films never seem to fare well and don't compare to Pirates of the Caribbean, totally different.

At least it's not being produced by Billy King and that's a good thing cause then he start handing out overpaid contracts to less than talented actors, would trade some characters for even worse ones and the budget would balloon sky high the film would flop and then he would screw up in his next script draft.

I think there could be an audience for a good, non-family pirate movie. I'd check it out if it looked decent. Also, my dad had done some geneology at some point, and found that our family may have been related to Blackbeard. So there's some built-in interest there.

Last time I checked Wales was part of Great Britain.

Anyhow, I love a good history movie. Blackbeard is one of those people in history that I fear to see on the big screen. He had a certain ferocity about him that I don't think anyone shy of Gerard Butler could bring.

Eh, Blackbeard is overated as a pirate. Black Bart Roberts was a hundred times worse and more succesful than Teach ever was. That would be a good movie. Besides, they already did a Blackbeard. Thing was so bad it went straight to video.
