DreamWorks Animation has announced a full development slate for their two-picture-per-year release schedule through at least 2009.

They have set KUNG FU PANDA, which Jack Black providing the voice of the panda, for a 2008 release. The movie, which is heavily influenced by films like KUNG FU HUSTLE, revolves around the bamboo forest dwellers in China who have to fight off invading snow leopards. A lazy, underachieving panda is the prophesized hero who can save them and the Valley of Peace. He must master the ancient art of kung fu to fend off the attackers. The script is by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab. John Stevenson and Mark Osborne will direct.

In addition to PANDA, DreamWorks also announced other possible projects which include HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, REX HAVOC, and IT CAME FROM EARTH!

DRAGON is based on the children's book by Cressida Cowell in which the son of a Viking chief must capture a dragon in order to be initiated into his tribe. Lorna Cook and David Soren will direct from a script by Will Davies

REX will center on a monster hunter called upon to battle aliens who have disrupted cable TV service. The project will be directed by Conrad Vernon, who will work from a script by Maya Forbes and Wally Wolodarsky.

EARTH is being described as a reverse alien invasion story told from the perspective of Martians when human astronauts arrive. Josh Lobis and Darin Moiselle wrote the script.

Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab are the writers. Hells yeah! Rob Schrab comicbook writer of SCUD: The Disposable Assassin and indie short Robot Bastard! is freakin' funny as hell. This has major potential, let's hope that dreamworks doesn't hack up their script.

Kung Fu Panda looks cute... I just don't want to hear "the chosen one" in a movie again for a very very very long time.

Lazy fat Panda becoming the hero? A little part of me wonders if this movie's quest is to appeal this movie to those lazy fat kids and invite them to get off the couch (or away from the computer) to actually DO something in society. Hmm.

On that note, I think I need to get out of the house.

With Jack Black's voiceover this ought to be funny.

If they use martial arts action stars as supporting cast it would make it that much funnier. Jet li, Jackie Chan, Vandamme, Segal doing voice overs would be cool.

And you think VanDamme'it is as a martial arts "star"? Admittedly, this idea has more merit than a lot if things out of Hollywood. But even with the voice of Jack Black, I’m reminiscent of how Hollywood will take a mediocre idea and make it worse. On television today we have good actors finding good scripts and good acting parts like Kira Sedgwick in “The Closer”, Dennis Farina on “Law and Order”, and even “Head Cases” with Chris O'Donnell and Adam Goldberg. (Though the last two I wouldn’t considerer being “good” actors, though I did like Chris in “The Chamber”). Actors might be more dazzled by film aficionados like Jerry Bruckheimer, and John Landis, than they would LaVar Burton or Allen Smithee, and would therefore give a more interesting performance. But with all of these great talents tied up into TV, who will be our movie stars? Our days of, “Say hello to my little friend,” are over. Who do we have that can replace that? Tom Welling? Seth Cohen? It’s rats before the children people! They saw it coming and bailed ship. We should learn by their example: choose which movies you go see. Rent before you buy. And maybe the movie industry might rethink how much crap to put out before they expect us to buy.
