It's not very often that a director will be removed or part ways with a production after the principal photography process has already been completed but this seems to be case in regards to Dredd and helmer Pete Travis. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Travis has been removed from the project shortly after entering the post-production stage, with the old explanation of "creative differences" being the reasoning.

Producer and writer Alex Garland has been inserted into the director's chair to complete the Lionsgate release, a task that will likely include reshoots. Previously set to arrived in theaters next September, the modern update of the comic hero will star Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey.

Plot Concept: "Dredd" takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot - if necessary.

Uh-oh. This spells doom for the film. Too bad. I was hoping that this would be a well-done and faithful adaptation.

 Do I see a DIRECT to DVD future here?  What brains does Hollywood have to carry on an already Box office failure of a not very popular comic?   Maybe they were fooled by the sequel to the Hulk, the Punisher, and the excitement over Green Lantern 2?

 Um, wow.  Post production.  Must of meant studio fingers were saying "we need a love interest" , "Why can't we get rid of the excess viloence to make it PG13?", etc.

Couldn't have said it better myself @swisshammer.  I was hoping all I'd have to worry about was the GIANT helmets but it looks like this movie has bigger problems.  I know they had director issues with the director of Punisher War Zone, and to tell the truth that movie wasn't terrible and was faithful at least in spirit to the character but you're right: the odds of Dredd sucking just went up an order of magnitude.

 I'll choose to try and have a positive outlook, and hope I'm not proven wrong.  I just looked up Pete Travis on IMDb, and while he seems competant enough, nothing he's done has really wowed me.  On the other hand, Karl Urban is an actor I have much faith in (love it that he is both Eomer from LOTR and Bones from Star Trek...VERSATILE, man!), and I liked Lena Headey in the Sarah Connor Chronicles and LOVE her in A Game of Thrones...she is perfectly cast as Cersei.  Hopefully the casting is able to carry the movie, and hopefully the producer knows a thing or two about directing.

 Crap.  I hope this is personal egos instead of creative differences.  Crossing my fingers.

Richard Donner was removed from the production of Superman/Superman II, and those are the only two watchable Superman movies ever made.  The Wizard of Oz had THREE different directors through the course of it's production.  Lots of other successful films encountered directorial issues.  Spartacus, Gone With The Wind and Saturday Night Fever just to name a few.  Don't Panic.

I am still looking forward to it, as a life long Dredd fan, but as much as i like Karl Urban, I would rather have seen Michael 'Zod' Shannon under the iconic helmet...

@millean

Exactly what do you think creative differences are?

 At least the writer is taking over. Garland is a pretty decent writer, and as producer, he might have been the one that removed Travis.
