"Drive: No Turning Back"

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Last week Alex Tully (Fillion) evolved, or maybe devolved depending on your perspective, into the skilled wheelman he had once been as part of a bank robbery team.  In the last few minutes of the episode he was able to pass all the other racers.  At the beginning of this episode he is rewarded for his advance in position.  He is given the opportunity for an even greater lead on his opponents; all he ahs to do is rob a back!  Being a fan of The Amazing Race I blurted out “It’s a Fast Forward!”  So he and his partner along with the brothers make a plan to rob the bank.  All goes well until a man dressed like a security guard (but not a security guard) holds the racers at gun point.  A fight follows and ends with Sean shooting and killing the guard and taking a bullet himself.  Tully drops his partner and the undamaged brother at a hotel and barrels off down the road saying he will take care of Sean.  Tully is conflicted, his instincts as well a criminal have kicked in, but given a moment to rest he returns to the more mild mannered man he’s been with his wife for the last several years.  In a scene that I’m really on the fence about Tully has a conversation with an apparition of his missing wife about why he’s doing what he’s doing.  Now he never believes he’s actually talking to her even saying that he shouldn’t be talking to himself while on the job but I just found the scene out of place in this series.

Speaking of out of place the Leigh and Susan storyline went really crazy.  They arrived at the checkpoint last and were told that they were eliminated from the race.  Susa refuses to quit though, swearing that she’s been talking to God and that he’s telling her that they are supposed to win.  So, she and Leigh continue driving trying to determine where the next checkpoint is.  Then suddenly a giant truck appears and runs them off the road, slamming into them several times.  Leigh awakens only to find Susan breathing her last breast.  Susan tells Leigh that God actually told her that Leigh would win the race.  So, Leigh walks away from her dead friend and hitchhikes to the next checkpoint.  I know this whole series is fantasy but I think having one friend walk away from another who’s just died is a little extreme.  I never cared much for these characters to start with and now I like Leigh even less.

Other changes are afoot as well.  Wendy gets a call from the safe house where her baby is stashed and is told that the house is being watched and she needs to come get her baby.  When she turns around Ivy pulls a gun on her and tells her to keep racing.  Wendy offers Ivy the car and Ivy replies that she can’t drive.  Can’t drive?  Then why is she a part of this race to start with?  Anyway I only find this story interesting because I like how Wendy goes from overly sweet mom type lady to near psychopath in the blink of an eye.  The Ellie and Rob story came off pretty flat to me this week, even though Rob finally found out what Ellie has been up to behind his back.  It’s hard for me to believe that she was so easily able to hide Rob’s recall to service from him and her motivations seem a bit week.  Sure I don’t doubt she wouldn’t want him to go back to Iraq and get killed but she had to know he’d be in trouble with the military if he just didn’t show up for duty.  It seems that her plan was for them to win the race and use the money to get fake ID’s and start new lives.  My question is how could she be married to him and not already know he wouldn’t agree to this plan?  He’s an uber-patriot and he’d rather go to prison than be branded a coward and traitor.  He tosses their phone, their link to the race out the window of the car, and plans to turn himself in at the nearest military base.  Honestly I can’t say that I really care what happens to these two.  I hope the writers can pump their story up soon.

The Tully character has been carrying this series and he continues to do so in this episode.  Now I will say that I’m starting to like his partner and the brothers too and like I said earlier Wendy is a funny diversion as long as she’s kept to a minimum.  So far, so good, let’s just hope the ratings are there to support the series….

Ummm.. 'Breathing her last breast'... Freudian slip? Or is this a surreal series?

"All goes well until a man dressed like a security guard (but not a security guard)"

What makes you say he's not an actual security guard? Sure, he could easily be someone that the Race Officials sent to make it harder for Alex and crew, but there's nothing to suggest that. The Bank looked like it was part of a strip mall and it's very likely that a strip mall would have it's own security guard at night. Just because he seemed willing to rape Corrina instead of call the police doesn't mean he isn't an actual security guard, it just means he's an asshole.

He so much as says he's not a security guard in the dialogue exchange. Also, even one of the characters mentions that "he should call it in" like most guards would but he never does.

He says he's not a cop. And most guards should "call it in" meaning alert their home office or call the cops. When he said he wasn't going to, he was leering at Corrina, implying that he had another way in mind to resolve the situation.

Think about it: Why would the people in charge of the race send someone dressed as a security guard to catch them robbing the bank if he was going to immediately admit that he wasn't a security guard. Also, he didn't go directly to the bank. He was making his rounds and was about to leave when he heard a noise. Again, if he was sent by the people in charge he would have gone directly to the bank.

I thought he said that he wasn't a cop. Not that he wasn't a security guard. Though I do think it's likely he was an agent of the Cabal trying to up the ante for Tully and company.

And he did agree that he should call it in but he would dicide what kind of call he would make. Implying that he might just kill them and tell everybody he had too.

I've never been too interested in the soldier and his girlfriend. They just seem like stock characters. Not evenup to the level of cliche becase there's nothing beneath the surface concept.

He's every stalwart soldier, she's every over anxious, and not so bright, girlfriend.

We've seen these characters done and done better since the 1930s and there doesn't really seem to be much that can be done with there limited story.

Unless we find that he really wanted to restart his secret ring in Iraq or she's recieved more specific death threats from the Cabal, or is at least a little smarter than she appears to be.

Me I just think and frankly that they are the proverbial red shirts there to get eliminated or killed as a dramatic example to the other racers.

I actually liked the conversation between the Tully and his wife. We've been told that she has had a profound influence on is life, and it's good to get a hint of the life and companion he's trying to get back. And since the pacing of the series doesn't lend itself well to flashbacks this is probably the only way we'll get to see Amy Acker doing anything.

Also I like the interraction between Wendy and Ivy. I think it fits perfectly with Ivy's character that she doesn't know how to drive. She's a natural born user, manipulating or threatening everyone else to get her where she wants to go. And now this sweet anxious and slightly psycho mom gets her to slip and drop a major bargaining chip in mom's lap. And note that at no point does Wendy turn the car around even as Ivy holds the gun at hger head.

Leighs decision, while seeming a little, I can accept f it's motivated by revenge. At not the holy quest for 32 million dollars. Surley she's determined that the monster truck was sent to intensionally kill them probably by the guys running the race. And she likely reserves some blame from Ivy for their plight. Ironic that in the lead in they have Ivy and Leigh riding together without Susan. Even though they changed the vehicle Tully and Corrina were driving. And why do they show the daughter in the back but not the father.

I will miss Susan, her fervor while a little weird was interesting.

First off for a main review on this site at least run spell check next time, "all he ahs to do is rob a back!" not even gonna get into the "breast" comment.
Secondly the guy was a security guard plain and simple watch the episode again and pay attention next time. ;)
I also have one question how do the brothers figure they are allowed to skip ahead like Tully? It would seem to me that when they miss a check point they will be eliiminated. Either the writers messed up or they have a plan for this situation, but it seems stange that that possiblility never occurs to either one of the brothers.

I haven't been watching this show, but Is there any point in even starting to watch it?

It started at a meager 6 million viewers, it's already down to 5.7. It's also produced by Tim Minear, whose productions for FOX always die a premature death (Firefly, Wonderfalls, The Inside, Standoff).

I like Minear's shows, but I think I'll wait for it to hit DVD.

If you aren't interested don't watch, if you are you should, people watching shows is what keeps them on the air, not waiting for them to get cancelled and come out on DVD. There is so much talk about a series like Firefly that was awsome but nobody watched and now we all regret it, don't worry about what everyone else is doing. I don't watch a show because of how many millions are also watching. I certainly wouldn't stop watching BSG just because the ratings are falling thats rediculous. The same goes for Drive.

snallygaster • Apr 25, 2007, 02:32pm •
Whether I watch or not has nothing to do with wether it stays on the air. The only people who count when watching shows are the ones who are in Nielsen households.

I also watch BG - which always has ratings that put it dangerously close to the edge - but the fact is it's been on long enough for me to get invested in it, so I'll continue following it through to the end.

The problem is that these serialized shows, especially if they start out weak in the ratings, tend to not last very long (especially on Fox). I'm just tired of starting to watch a show (like Daybreak, Firefly, or Wonderfalls) only to have them cancel it just as it gets interesting. Given the current ratings, and the fact that May sweeps period is only a week away, I suspect Drive will air only four episodes before they pull the plug.

HudsonTaco • Apr 25, 2007, 03:00pm •
well they aired 4 already and the 5th is coming on Monday. I agree with you about starting to watch a show only to have it pulled when it gets good, but basing weather or not you check out a show on the neilson ratings is sad, but to each their own. Is it my favorite show on TV no, not by a long shot but it is certainly better than watching Deal or No deal b4 Heroes comes on. I suspect the show will finish the episodes that are already filmed, maybe they will relaunch it after sweeps who knows, but I won't stop watching it and I certainly won't by a show on DVD if I have never seen it before, I pay for Sattleite so I can watch these shows for free along with my Hockey. Only the very best will I throw down extra money for, like BSG and Firefly.
