DVD Review of THE BATMAN: Complete 5th Season

By: Tim Janson
Review Date: Sunday, July 20, 2008

As noted by the writers and producers in the featurettes, the theme of the 5th and final season of The Batman is the Brave and the Bold as Batman teams up with each member of the Justice League of America. This season also serves to integrate Batman into the JLA and consequently, we have him facing fewer of his rogues gallery than in previous seasons.

The set begins with the two-part “Batman/Superman Story”. Lex Luthor has recruited some of Gotham’s most notorious villains including Black Mask, Clayface, Mr. Freeze, and Poison Ivy to take down Superman. Combining Ivy’s mind-control spores with Kryptonite dust, Luthor gains control of Superman and orders him to destroy Batman. Outstanding story to begin the season! Batman battles it out with Superman in a special set of high-powered armor.

“Vertigo” finds Batman teaming up with Green Arrow to take on Count Vertigo, a former employee of Oliver Queen’s, who plans to use his dizzying powers to rob a mint.

“A Mirror Darkly” features the Flash and his longtime villain Mirror Master. He threatens to imprison all of Gotham within mirrors unless he can be stopped. Mirror Master is voiced by John Larroquette.

In one of season five’s best episodes, Batman teams with Green Lantern (Dermot Mulroney) to battle Sinestro (Miguel Ferrer) who has escaped from his Green Lantern Corps. Stasis prison and comes to Earth seeking revenge. This is a brilliant episode that finds Batman having to use the power ring when Green Lantern is hurt.

Black Mask breaks out of Arkham Asylum in “What Goes Up” with help from the Shadow Thief (Diedrich Bader). Later they steal a meteor, which came from Thanagar, to obtain the powerful Nth Element. This brings Hawkman to town to aid Batman. Hawkman is voiced by Robert Patrick.

The season ends with another two-part episode as Batman teams with the entire JLA against the alien Joining, who were defeated at the end of Season four. This time the aliens have recruited Hugo Strange to help them steal the powers of Superman, Hawkman, Matian Manhuter, Flash, and Green Lantern, leaving only Batman, Robin, and Green Arrow to contend with.

Besides the team-ups, the Joker is back for three episodes but there’s very little seen of the rest of Batman’s usual villains. This may turnoff strictly Batman fans but Brave and the Bold was always a great comic because you got to see Batman teaming with a new hero each month and that works will on DVD. You can only have Batman fight Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Scarecrow so many times. Because of the team-ups, season five ended on a very high note! While it may not have been quite as good as Batman: The Animated Series, it was certain far superior to The New Batman Adventures, and Batman Beyond. The series featured outstanding voice work from a host of well-known actors. Besides those mentioned above the actors include Ron Perlman (Killer Croc), Clancy Brown (Mr. Freeze), James Remar (Black Mask), Dan Castellaneta (Scarface), Dana Delany (Lois Lane) and Louis Gossett, Jr. (Lucius Fox).

I still like the Conroy series way better than this rehash stuff. But I am glad there is still a presence on tv for Batman. They need more adult Batman stuff like the new DVD mini movies.

Both series started off as ways for the WB to cash in on their Batman movies, the original and Begins, respectively, but you are completely right, Dazzler, there's no comparison with B:TAS and this pablum.
