Yet another weak ass week of DVD and Blu-ray releases. I’ll admit that it is kind of nice to look forward to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The Expendables without having a huge amount of distractions. You might have noticed in my column, as of late, I have added my top 5 picks of the week. Damn, if it wasn’t hard to come up with 5 titles for August 10th. The Complete Series of Max Headroom will be a great pick up, I hope. I remember the show being on but for some reason I never watched it. I’ll give it 3 episodes to see if I want to sit through the other 11. Outside of the first season of Titan Maximum there really isn’t much in the genre that we here at Mania love so much.
I try and give you Maniacs a look ahead at new titles three times a year. A chance to see what is slated for review. Rarely do I ever give you my opinion on why I pick certain titles. For the first time here is my look ahead at the new titles and my thoughts (a la the old Spinner Rack column).
Alien Anthology [Blu-ray]10/26/10 this will be the ultimate holiday gift (check out the Fox site for the complete details). This is the Aliens box set that we have been waiting for. I’m even excited to watch 3 and 4 again!

Yes, Max Headroom is worth your time. And money. Perhaps it looks a little dated now but it's satire of TV networks is even more relevant than it was in the 80s.
And really, Matt Frewer. What more really needs to be said.
I am going to need one big shopping bag this Christmas. That is great stuff coming out. Also coming out is a new Blu ray of The Third Man and Apocalypse Now (which includes the original version, the longer version, and Heart of Darkness: A Filmaker's Apocalypse all in one set)
I never made it through THX without falling asleep and I tried four times. Don't bet on Lucas putting both versions out there, he likes sucks..er...fans to double and triple dip as much as possible.
The Alien Anthology isn't worth upgrading for. It's smart of Fox to put it together but there isn't enough new items on it to update it from my quadrilogy I bought several years ago and I don't need it on blu ray.
IM2, Tron blu ray, Inception, and the Pacific are the only DVD's I see myself adding to the collection rest of year...thus far.
Finally, they are putting out Grindhouse the way it was shown in theaters. Granted, Death sucked, but I'll pick up this blu-ray just for Planet Terror and the faux trailers.
I'm with you, Hobbs, on the Alien box set. I have Quadrilogy and see the need to upgrade. Surprisingly, the director's cut of Alien 3 is pretty decent at least until the final 30 minutes or so.
Can't wait for Back to the Future and Pyscho on Blu-ray! North By Northwest on Blu was AWESOME!
