Blu-rays and DVDs for 2010

Welcome to"2010: The Year We Make Contact" or at least I hope we do. The craziness of the holidays is over but, fear not there are a slew of titles slated for release in the next few months. Thankfully the only upside to a bad economy is that the studios are stretching out titles into the first quarter instead of having everything come in November and December. There are a few releases that tie into bigger theatrical releases, Clash of the Titans (March 26)and The Wolfman (February 12) which will enable us to finally get one of these on Blu-ray. As usual with the DVD Shopping Bag’s first look none of this is scripture. Universal’s original Wolf Man (1941) has been bouncing all over the place for the last few months and may get changed again. Hopefully we can get our hands on the Universal Legacy Edition sooner than never.

February 2010 DVDs

January has a lot of promise and the one title that I have been looking forward to owning is Duncan Jones’ Moon. I guarantee it will be the feature of next week’s DVD Shopping Bag as it is sitting here on my desk. There is yet another season of The Simpsons (the 20th) on the way but with no Blu-ray in sight what’s the point? What I am totally geeking out for is the special edition of Kingdom of the Spiders (1977) starring none other than William Shatner. It is packed full of special features and despite it not being on Blu-ray I will be happy with what I can get! Look for its review in a few weeks. Here are some choice genre picks for January.

February 2010 DVDs

Finally both of Universal’s Wolf Manmovies areslated to come out. Why they need to put out the original with the new film is beyond me. Why Universal hasn’t released all their horror classics on Blu-ray is another head scratcher. Doctor Who fans will finally be able to get all the special episodes in one box set on Blu-ray and DVD. However I suggest picking up, or renting if you don’t have any faith in me, Black Dynamite. Imagine a slightly more serious version of I’m Gonna Get You Sucka (1988) but packing non-stop laughs from beginning to end. I loved it. It actually made me wish Michael Jai White would get another crack at Spawn. Yet if you never caught it pick up Man From Earth (2007) on Blu-ray or even DVD. One of the best science fiction films ever told in such a simplistic manner. Your imagination supplies all the special effects.

The Wolf Man (Special Edition) (Universal Legacy Series)

March and beyond are still sketchy but already the Clash of the Titans (1981) is slated for a Blu-ray release, hopefully with some retrospectives. The Wraith (1986), starring Charlie Sheen, will also get a special edition release. There isn’t a Blu-ray release date set yet.

Yeah Zombie Land.

Halloween II will be sell for $1.46 in six months.

Why are they skipping ahead to the 20th season for the Simpsons?  The last season released was 12th.

And yeah, Zombieland was awesome.  Looking forward to that one.

Moon, Black Dynamite and Zombieland are all on my list. The original Clash of the Titans as well before that Leterrier cumshot splatters on the screen this summer and ruins yet another classic.

Daforce, I have to agree with you about Clash Of The Titans...I was actually looking forward to this until they decided they wanted to change it to a 3-D format and start reshooting scenes for it.  All because of Avatars success.  If the movies wasn't MEANT to be 3-D when you started making it then to do so is just a gimmick and I think will hurt the movie.

Moon interests me...I'll rent it and make up my mind about adding it to the collection.

I'm sure Tron in blu-ray will come out later this year as well to go with the new movie in December.

I'm finally starting to see blu-ray DVD's come down to a respectable price so I'm seriously thinking about the upgrade.

Hobbs it is time... it is all I get anymore. New movies are usually a given on great picture and sound. It is the older films where you really notice the difference! ~ Robert

I would like to see a Clash of the Titans on blu-ray with not only some retrospectives including a documentary and audio commentary but also a much cleaner transfer and 5.1 audio surround sound! I'm sick of the studios(and Warner Brothers are among one of the worst at this!)who keep giving us bad transfered films on dvd or blu-ray because I find it insulting. The picture for CotT needs to be redone in a big way as well as the sound. Hopefully,WB will wake up and do so with CotT as well as Excalibur!

themovielord 1/6/2010 8:16:33 PM

Excalibur, that would be sweet. Their Logan's Run was terrible too by the way...

keithdaniel 1/9/2010 9:42:05 AM

Outland as well!
