DVD Shopping Bag: DVD Maniac Worthy? Almost

By: Robert T. Trate

When Neil Marshall’s unrated Doomsday was half finished I thought this just might be the perfect film for Mania. A Maniac’s delight of science fiction, action and post apocalyptic nightmares. With genre favorite Malcolm McDowell’s opening prologue/ monologue painting a brilliant picture of a society plagued by mankinds’ inhumanity, this film instantly became something that any Maniac would love.

The plot revolves around a commando, Rhona Mitra, who is sent to the plagued city of Glasgow, Scotland to discover how and why there are survivors some thirty years later. Think Snake Plissken had a daughter who decided to work for the government even though she knows they are corrupt and you’ve got the character.

Tyler Bates’ score painted a layer which invoked the great early work, definitely not his later work, of John Carpenter. Escape From New York and Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) are huge influences on this film. The lighting, pacing and characters all pay homage to those two films. It doesn’t stop there though, the Mad Max films, 28 Days Later, Gladiator and Reign of Fire are in here as well. This Maniac movie milkshake was perfect until the end.

Obviously, Neil Marshall had done his homework. He took all the great intense and thrilling moments from those previously mentioned films and crafted a ride that was Maniac worthy. Unfortunately, it all fell apart in the last few moments. Sure his heroine brings the shady politician to justice and in doing so she puts the world into even more chaos a la Snake Plissken. However, he falters because she embraces the savages of the new world instead of returning to the shadows. Neil Marshall missed the point and gave the audience nothing but confusion. Coming down from the adrenaline packed thrill ride you’ll ask, “What?” and “Why?”

I’ll recommend Doomsday for those who love all of the previously mentioned films and the craftsmanship in which Neil Marshall wove them together. It begs to ask, what film is Maniac worthy (hanso I’ve already put you down for The Dark Knight)?

Wow thanks for the Spoiler warning. I havent seen the movie yet and it seems you managed to tell pretty much the whole damn story in about one sentence.

It seems Doomsday is a movie you either like or dislike and for me the movie was fucking awesome! I rented it, liked it and then bought it the same day! The movie was like putting Road Warrior and Escape from N.Y. in one movie but hey!, I like it!!

Good, good movie!

Nice review Robert, I liked this movie so much I saw it twice in two days with two different people. I agree that it expertly nailed the "early 80's sci-fi action" thing which I was weened on. I'm looking forward to seeing it again on DVD. I'll look at the ending with a more critical eye this time as I don't remember it undermining the movie as you say. It's a really well crafted and loving homage to the films of that era.

irascible, I have a Dark City review coming. And I apologize for the Spoilers. I didn't ruin anything trust me. You can still watch it with a critical eye and enjoy it for all that it is. "Sure his heroine brings the shady politician to justice and in doing so she puts the world into even more chaos a la Snake Plissken." This was obvious that this was going to happen because it always does. ~ Robert

I have to agree with the esteemed GentlemenDeath & JoshGordon.......I loved this movie too!! I was not looking for an epic movie like LoTR I was looking for a movie that was over the top fun!!! I thought that Dog Soliders was also a great movie by Neil Marshall and I was not disappointed here either!!! I will be picking this movie up tonight after work from BestBuy!!!

Thanks Robert - meant the comment with a little less acidity. I am SO tempted to run and get the DC dvd....
Anyone else see "Brotherhood of the Wolf"? It definately borrows from other movies but the combination kungfu/horror/espionage/other seemed to work for me. And I'm biased as soon as Monica Bellucci shows up.

Man, that movie was one of the stinkiest festival of crap I've ever seen.

It's true the feel and vide of the 80's action movies is very present but there is so much non-sense in that movie it's unbeliable.

In any case, I guess if people liked it, all the best to you...I would prefer to be tortured with fire and knives then to see that hell hole again.
