DVD Shopping Bag: The Evil Dead Limited Edition Blu-ray

Good? Bad? Mania’s the one with the Blu-ray!

Back in December of 2007 I was just starting out here at Mania and got a rather choice assignment. Anchor Bay had sent us a copy of their new Evil Dead Ultimate Edition on 3 Discs (see review). The chance to talk about one of my favorite films and review a ton of new special features was a joy for this young writer at the time. Looking back now I probably would have complained that this edition was not on HD-DVD or Blu-ray. Funny how things change in three years. Today Anchor Bay has released, finally, Sam Raimi’s horror classic the Evil Dead (1981) on Blu-ray. I know, I know you probably already have three or four copies sitting around. Should you pick up this edition now? Let’s get right into it because good, bad, we’re the ones with the Blu-ray.
All the special features are the same as the Evil Dead Ultimate Edition circa 2007 sans one and that is a new commentary. If shelf space is your thing then already this is the edition for you. In December of 2009 Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert recorded a new commentary for this Blu-ray. Oddly enough their original commentary is not present. I don’t know whether or not it was because I had sat through the original one, as well as The Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness commentaries or that I had read Bruce Campbell’s book but I was bored out of my mind. It felt as if these three guys were sitting around telling the story of how they did the movie and not paying attention to what was on screen. Sure this had been done in the previous releases but I found myself nodding off more than intrigued by their stories. The beginning of the film preproduction was interesting from a films historian’s point of view. All three were quick to point out how the business had changed and that their “drive in only” movie was obviously more suited for the big screen than they had thought.
The transfer to Blu-ray is as good as it is going to get. So I thought I would dive into the special features for fun but I had seen them all already. Don’t get me wrong I love The Evil Dead. So when the opportunity arises to show it to someone new I am the first to volunteer my time and copy. This time around I found it dull like a friend’s stories you had heard once too often. I appreciated that Anchor Bay included both versions of the film (1.33:1 and 1.85:1) and the option to choose between them. What should have been included is new commentary from the Ladies of the Evil Dead: Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly. At the very least throw Richard DeManincor in there as well. A fresh set of stories for this Blu-ray along with other three guys would have been nice.
If you never picked up the Ultimate 3 Disc version or you are now a Blu-ray fanatic than by all means it is time to invest in this latest version. If you are cool with the three disc version, which is incredible by the way, then The Evil Dead on Blu-ray is worth skipping. This version may be all for not any way as the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Evil Dead will probably be out next year.

Bob, thanks again for saving my time and more importantly my money.  I'll stick with my Ultimate Editions 3-Disc and my Book of the Dead Edition.  Had one of the earlier ones too, but got rid of it after Book of the Dead came out.
