DVD Shopping Bag: Hot Tub Time Machine

We’ll travel back to 2007

Sorry loyal Maniacs if you were looking for a full review on Hot Tub Time Machine the Unrated edition you won’t find it in this week’s column. I tried to get a copy for review however the title is being released through MGM. They are having all kinds of problems (see Hobbit Update) right now so no quick look at the Blu-ray for me or for you. I will tell you this; I really enjoyed myself watching Hot Tub Time Machine in the theater. It never took itself too seriously. There is a tone and a science to time travel movies and it had the right one for its title.

With that I thought what I would do is travel back and revisit a topic I haven’t touched on in a few years. Last week I had a conversation with a friend about the TV series Quantum Leap. I know, I know it is one of my favorites too. I got in the mood for the show and realized that I didn’t own it on DVD. Well since I have made the switch over to Blu-ray I thought why not get it on Blu-ray instead. Here comes the shocker Maniacs Quantum Leap, that brilliant sci-fi show that ran for 5 seasons on NBC, is not on Blu-ray.

The gears started working at this point and I thought, when? Will it have to be for the show’s 25th anniversary for it to be released (in just 4 years)? Then I started to think of a few more TV series, collections and movies that have yet to be released on Blu-ray. A few years ago when I started writing for Mania I had column fall on Christmas Day. Not a big traffic day so I posted my DVD wish list (see column). Oddly enough those 5 titles which I listed are still not available on DVD let alone Blu-ray. Two of which I still have hope for and believe that it is only a matter of time. Here is my new list for 2010. Only now I want them on Blu-ray.

After three Spider-Man movies these still aren’t on DVD or Blu-ray. What I don’t understand is if the Spider-Man ‘67 Collection is then why not this cartoon from the eighties? They have been on Disney XD and the Mouse is now in control or partnered with Marvel so it will probably be soon. More or less around the time when Marc Webb’s Spider-Man hits the big screen is when we’ll see it.

2. Batman(1966-1968)
Having just recently seen Adam West at Wizard World Philly (see photos) I learned from the man himself that the answer is still a no on this landmark series. It is all a matter of money and who gets what according to Mayor West. In case you didn’t know, it was a FOX TV show but Warner Brothers own the rights to the characters. Until then I’ll just keep watching Batman: The Movie on Blu-ray.

3. The Star Wars Saga
I know it is like asking for the Holy Grail but how much longer do we have to wait? Well I have a theory that the wait may be over soon. George Lucas is a creature of habit and since I, like many of you, have brought his various Star Wars products in the past the time is coming. Just look at the signs. This year is the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. There is a huge Star Wars Celebration occurring in August down in Florida. A new book celebrating Empire’s 30th year is set to be released in the fall too. Let us also not forget Star Wars the Force Unleashed 2 will arrive in time for the holidays. George has done this before. It’s like an onslaught where the hype pours into all the different mediums. The Star Wars frenzy will begin in August and before you know it there will be so many new Star Wars products arriving that a set of Blu-rays will have to make an appearance.

4. Universal Horror Collection
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Universal Legacy Series. They are perfect. I did however think the Legacy Collection was better. Why not encompass both titles into one Blu-ray? There certainly is enough space. Originally I hoped Universal would release The Wolf Man on Blu-ray when the 2010 remake came out. It seemed like the perfect time. When Wolfman 2010 bombed those hopes were quickly dashed. There is some hope on the dark horizon. Universal has announced that Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho will be on Blu-ray in October. Will there be more classic Universal Blu-rays to follow? Certainly.

5. Hammer Horror Films
Warner Brothers hasn’t been shy with releasing titles on Blu-ray. Their degree of effort though varies from film to film. The big titles such as the Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, Gone With the Wind and North by Northwest got the royal treatment. Yet smaller titles such as Logan’s Run got poor transfers and less special features than the DVD release. So where does Hammer Horror fall? There have been numerous box sets released but each for a different studio. Hammer Horror on Blu-ray won’t happen any time soon.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. There are tons of titles out there that I am constantly looking for. Sound off below Maniacs. What do you want on Blu-ray?

Glad to see the 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo is finally getting released. I used to love that show as a kid, but was realy disappointed that its airings were sporadic and I never got to see all the episodes.

Re: Batman 1966.

The funny thing is that it's not even a fight between WB and Fox, as they settled a couple of years ago as part of the Watchmen settlement.  It's the estate of one of the producers (William Dozier's, I think) that's holding things up now.
