Why remake this?

When I heard that a remake of I Spit on Your Grave was in the works I had to ask why? The original from 1978 (aka Day of the Woman) is far from being a classic horror film. It is a film that had life because of its gratuitous box featuring a woman’s posterior and its strong subject matter. Without the curious/ twisted horror junkie a film like I Spit on Your Grave would have never survived the video cassette era, let alone warrant a remake. Why? Well in case you haven’t seen I Spit on Your Grave I’ll give you the premise. A young woman is brutally raped and left for dead. She finds the strength to survive and then acts out her revenge. You get a very disturbing shocking scene of men doing this act. As the added bonus you also get their equally violent come-uppance. This is supposed to be entertainment and a horror film? If you feel disgust and indifference towards this type of entertainment, then please skip ahead to my Top 5 picks of the week.
This is the exact same film, in premise, to the original. Sure the names are close to the original characters but I will not go into a comparison of who played a better Johnny or a better Matthew. It is pointless. This is a pointless remake that banked on an old video store movie that people picked up when all the copies of Hellraiser were gone on Halloween. Sarah Butler does a fine job as the victim. She doesn’t warrant any negative sympathy and why should she? She is going to get tortured over and over again and left for dead. Kudos to the actress for taking the part as it is a physically and emotionally exhausting role. I do have to wonder how does one prepare for such a part in this type of movie. Watch Jodi Foster in The Accused (1988) over and over again? Check out the original? Research the part with actual victims. I never doubted Butler’s emotional pain it was just her revenge that was hallow. Then again that was probably what she was going for.
Date Night
A night at the movies is typically date night. Out with your significant other to catch a flick and indulge in some great conversation about why the film rocked or sucked. I Spit on Your Grave doesn’t really fall into that category. So perhaps this is a night out with friends to watch a scary film? This film is far from scary and nothing more than a twisted voyeur trip. Is it any wonder why the film only made $92,401 in five weeks? Who would want to go out and see this? Like its older counter part this I Spit on Your Grave is doomed to the video store. Oh wait, we barely have those anymore. Remember when a trip to the video store usually meant you and your significant other had no money for a night out…
What Have We Learned?
If anything I Spit on Your Grave taught me one thing. Always bring two cell phones with you when you are traveling in rural America. It seems pretty straight forward to me. In all seriousness this was yet another unnecessary remake. Much in the vein of The Last House on the Left (2009) Hollywood might have finally reached the bottom of the barrel for horror remakes. Again there is still Shocker (1989) and The People Under the Stairs (1991) just waiting to hit the big screen again. Personally, I can’t wait for the remake of The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (1992).

 Barb Wire: Epic.

millean 2/8/2011 10:11:03 AM

Yep, can't believe Barb Wire didn't make the top 5.  It's so bad, it's good.

Wasn't the National Treasure movies already available on Blu-Ray.  Pretty sure I already own them in that format, so this has to be the Double Secret Probation versions.

And every time I see Bill Nighy's name, I always start singing the "Bill Nye the Science Guy" theme song...

A number of Disney movies seem to have been rereleased to Blu-Ray this week.

No love for Pleasantville here? I thought it was the best pure fantasy of the Nineties...

InnerSanctum 2/8/2011 3:05:02 PM

millean:  Do you really think Barb Wire was so bad it was good?  I just thought it was bad.

doblec:  I LOVE Pleasantville.  Great movie and still quite enjoyable.

I'm wondering, when are the prices of Blu-Rays going to become reasonable?  I have a lot of favorite films, but they are just fine in the DVD format (I can't even bring myself to pay $4 more dollars to Netflix just to get the BR treatment.)  Blu-Ray players are now much less expensive, so I would think the movies would follow.

Pleasantville was on Blu-ray last week or the week before!

You should have reviewed the Doctor Who movie.  That's been hard to find for ages!
