DVD Shopping Bag: Indiana Jones, Box Set and Blu-Ray

By: Robert T. Trate
Date: Tuesday, May 06, 2008

With two weeks to go before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull I got a chance to look at the new editions of the Indiana Jones trilogy. To be honest with you I was disappointed that they weren’t released on Blu-Ray. I felt cheated that these new versions had all new interviews and special features that were not on the long awaited 2003 editions, until I watched them. With previous unreleased archive footage, storyboards, interviews and recreations of classic moments; the Indiana Jones - The Adventure Collection was the perfect treat to satisfy this Indiana Jones fan.

There are some special features that deal with Well of Souls, the Mine Car Chase and Indy’s first adventure (with River Phoenix) that have storyboards running simultaneously with the film. This has to be a precursor for the Blu-Ray editions. I was asked by my Dad, who watched the special features with me, “Why would you watch this?” My answer to him was, because I have seen it a thousand times. Here I can see what was envisioned on paper and how the practicality of it came to life. If they do this for the entire movie on Blu-Ray, fans of Indiana Jones will have the opportunity to see it as Spielberg and Lucas saw it for the first time. For this fan that feature is priceless.

The interviews with the cast and crew of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull relating their experiences with the original films included nostalgic stories and emotional memories. Usually this is not something I go for, but when Ray Winstone (Mac in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) mentioned that his favorite part of the entire trilogy was the relationship that Indy (Harrison Ford) shared with his father (Sean Connery). The movie wasn’t about an artifact. In actuality it was an emotional journey for these characters to find one another. I was reminded of my own emotional attachment to the films. They really have become a part of our culture, history and mythos. At the same time, I became scared, because all this has happened before.

All of the feelings I had when the new Star Wars trilogy arrived back in 1999 came rushing back. I am positive that there are those of you who know what I am talking about. We were all disappointed with the new trilogy in one way or another. Now the powers that be have resurrected one of the last great pieces of our childhood for one more adventure. Of course the verdict will be out on May 22. Until then, I recommend picking up these new editions. Give your old ones to someone who has never seen an Indiana Jones movie (yes those people do exist, I found one last week). Hold onto to that fourth disc because these new special editions, as great as they are, don’t have the depth of the 2003 supplemental material.   If you can, take a personal day off from work and be nostalgic with Indiana Jones one last time.

Indiana Jones - The Adventure Collection will be released on May 13, 2008.

I'll wait for all four on Blu-ray or even just the newest movie, since I already own the other three.

Ok, why on earth would you buy the trilogy now with a fourth movie coming out in a few weeks? Makes no sense!

Did I miss something this week? Where is TV Wasteland? Maybe I just can't find it because of there are no column titles on this new and unimproved site.

The Indy DVDs are being marketed the Lucas way: Sell them once - then re-release them with a bit more stuff, then re-re-release them again with a bit more - then bend the fans over and (without vaseline) screw them a bit more with another edition. I'm glad they didn't release them on blu-ray. This way the blank media will come down in price and someone with a crack will appear and I can copy the damned things. I just bought that last edition on DVD FFS! NO doubt they are waiting for the latest Indy to finish in the theaters before blu-ray.

I believe IRASCIBLE is right...Lucas loves reaming fan boy brown eye over and over again without any lube, He's just that way but you can't blame him because the fan boy is bending over and taking it, by going out and buying dvd brown eye reamings, either way someone is reaming and someone is getting reamed, I'd rather be the one doing the reaming and making all the money...That's my reaming story and I am sticking to it...I'll wait for all four to come out in BR format...

Are these going to be available individually, or as a box set only? I only really want 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'--could care less about the other two.

Robert T. Trate; You recommend picking up these new editions and give our old ones to someone who has never seen an Indiana Jones movie. I recommend not to buy these new DVD editions and wait a couple of months when Lucas release the blu-ray package wich will probably include even more special features and the new film. Then, we give our old ones to somebody else.
