On May 13th of 2009 Lost fans let out a collective groan as we saw Lost’s return date, February 2010. Well February isn’t all that far off now and the perfect Lost fix has arrived. Today Lost: The Complete Fifth Season on Blu-ray and DVD has arrived. If you haven’t made the plunge into Blu-ray then Lost is the perfect excuse. Not only do you get added bonus features not present on the DVD but you witness the beautiful landscape of Hawaii in full 1080p (see Lost season 1 and 2 column). Outside of the landscape the characters look sweaty and grimy in such a way that you’ll never watch Lost again on anything but Blu-ray and HD TV.

Season 5 of Lost is packed with tons of special features that take you behind the scenes, examine the 100th episode and just how the cast and crew dealt with all the time travel. The time travel segment, “Making Up for Lost Time”, is hosted by producers/ writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Here they confess that they love the idea of the characters changing their own future. Can they hit the erase button and get a do over? Lindelof, as well as a few others, also admit to the appeal of going back to the beginning and explaining how the Dharma Initiative came from the fans’ need to have answers. Reverse engineering everything became the true challenge and fun in casting people who had only been talked about. Best yet was Cuse admitting that if the non sci-fi fans of the show didn’t understand what was going on they had Sawyer’s (Josh Holloway) shirt off so all their bases were covered.

Now there are many fans of the show that participate in the online Lost experience. People who Google search names, numbers and clues. The producers, to their credit, supply enough answers to keep the mythos in full swing yet don’t ruin anything for the non-fanatical fan like myself. I really enjoy the show but don’t research a series of numbers mentioned on the show to see if they have some deeper meaning. Plus anything that is released on the web will be featured in its entirety on the DVDs and Blu-rays. Oddly enough the one special feature on the Blu-ray that really had me excited was “LOST University”. Part of the BD Live experience, one is able to have the chance to enroll and participate in that very same interactive experience I had long shied away from. In a collegiate atmosphere I could explore themes, stories and secrets of the show. Unfortunately it goes live today and was unavailable at my deadline. Check out the experience (Blu-ray or not) at Lost University.

What I was able to watch from the online Lost experience was “Mysteries of the Universe: The Dharma Initiative”. A half hour show in the style of In Search of that asks the question, what is the Dharma Initiative? Completely captivated I found myself writing down the names Alvar Hanso and Gerald DeGroot (links supplied) to see how they are connected to the whole mythos. Will these be characters we see in the final season? The show itself is a great collection of stock footage that fills up the time. The narrator talks about how puzzling the Dharma Initiative is and then we see a man putting a puzzle together on screen. It is complete with close ups of the pieces not fitting together. Though personally I loved the “who is the master puppeteer behind all this?” and we see a marionette dancing on the screen. Outside of spoofing In Search of there are some interesting facts that are brought up. The Dharma Initiative’s hiring process and questionnaire complete with “Who is your constant?” being a question. A list of supplies including 1.4 tons of seeds, M1 Carbine ammunition and submarine fuel found in a church. Could the island be one of the 169 islands on Tonga? What do all those broken lines in the Dharma logo really mean? It is a Bhagwa symbol meaning protection but why is it tied to astronomy, astrology, geography and anatomy? There was way too much food for thought, and this was one thirty minute show, so hopefully when Lost University goes live all these answers will have some questions.

For the true die hard Lost fan Lost: The Complete Fifth Season Dharma Initiative Orientation Kit is also available.Hanso and I were talking about this a few weeks ago and perhaps it may be better to wait and see what a complete series special edition has to offer. Hopefully there will a work suit, a mini Volkswagen van and a Dharma Initiative hat for starters.

As much as I love Lost I don't own any of the DVDs. This set sounds pretty sweet, but I will probably wait for the complete series.

I worship at the altar of Lost!  This Blu Ray release is killing me man, I want it so bad but I must be strong and hold out for the complete set.  That has to be legendary when it comes out, I want it to have a frozen donkey wheel that will send me back in time.

What up with Warner Bros trying to rip people off with the Harry Potter stuff?  They already had one Blu Ray then they made some special edition blu ray of all the movies and they've also been selling the sets.  When the 5th movie came out they sold a 5 movie set, now they got a 6 movie set.  Does anyone actually buy those?  Wait till all the films come out damn it!

ddiaz28 12/8/2009 6:27:08 AM

Same here.  Although I'd love to see those special features, especially the Lost Unversity, I'll wait for the whole series on Blu Ray.  The same goes for the HP series.

Bryzarro 12/8/2009 7:19:25 AM

I'm with you Hanso.  But I do pick up the regular DVD's.  When the Blu-ray set comes in full my little bro is going to take my DVD series.

I am going so crazy stupid waiting for this season to start.  I'm probably gonna wear out the disks watching them.

HP I only pick up the regular DVD's.  I'm not so big on special additions or anything.  I enjoy the movies but I do enjoy how the books give more detail.

hanso 12/8/2009 9:16:31 AM

I keep my Lost fix via Netflix's streaming option if not I would've picked up the DVDs and waited for the Blu Ray set.

Harry POtter, I got the regular edition blu rays of the first 5 movies, gotta get the new one though.  I was pissed when I saw they had released new special editions of the other 5.

myklspader 12/8/2009 11:52:49 AM

I got get on the Blu Ray wagon and put that part of my PS3 to use. I will wait though until the series is all done before plunging down that rabbit hole. I can't wait to pick up this season and watch it again over the weekend.

hanso 12/8/2009 3:02:07 PM

Myklspader, I don't know if you know this but if you have Netflix they recently started streaming to the PS3.  All you gotta do is call them up or go to the website and order a free disc they send you so you can put in your PS3 and watch Netflix.

I'm Late to the Lost Bandwagon, but now that I'm on I'm standing on the roof with Hanso, Whoopin' it up!

Just finished season 5, and NOW I see what all the fuss is about.

I started watching in November on Netfix watch instantly, I couldn't watch any less than 3 episodes at a time! And watched eps. almost every day. What a cool show.

It's gonna be so hard to watch only one episode per week for season 6.

After seeing how good a show like this can be, I will hold Heroes to a higer standard. AND is it the same Brian K. Vaughn we know and love from Comics (Y TLM) as Exec Producer?

And NBC went to Loeb (Red HULK???) as their producer from the comics? (had to be a favor to Tim Sale)

themovielord 12/9/2009 12:45:08 PM

Same Brian K Vaughn! Good luck with watching one episode a week! It is murder when they go one a two week hitaus!

hanso 12/9/2009 4:29:34 PM

The Island welcomes you Gauley my brotha. Waiting for an episode of Lost is difficult, but the good thing is you get to think and build up anticipation for the next one.

You gotta join the Lost Community here on Mania once they start covering the series, those threads always help the time go by.
