DVD Shopping Bag: Mummy Mania

Back in the summer of 1999 I was chomping at the bit for a little film called Star Wars The Phantom Menace. I would ritualistically watch the trailer that I recorded when it was on Entertainment Tonight, listen to the soundtrack and rearrange my action figures every day. The summer of 1999 belonged to Star Wars that year but there were, of course, other movies to see. Universal Studios released a re-imagined version of the 1932 classic The Mummy also titled The Mummy. I was not nearly as excited for The Mummy as I was for The Phantom Menace but it was nonetheless a summer movie. For many of my friends and me, summer movies were as important as post season football is for others. Each week we would watch the latest movie and then discuss the whole thing.

After The Mummy we chatted about the film’s “funny moments” but no one was really excited about the movie. We didn’t feel ripped off for paying to see and no one wanted to it again. I never saw The Mummy again. It spawned a sequel but I really didn’t care what kind of danger Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) would get themselves into next. The Scorpion King came and went and now there is a third mummy film in the theaters.

Universal Studios supplied me with an array of Mummy mania DVDs to hype The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Nine years later I popped in Brendan Fraser‘s, The Mummy into my DVD player and decided to give it another chance. Thinking I was blinded by my fan boy joy of the upcoming new Star Wars film, I figured that a film which spawned two sequels and a spin off is worth another viewing.

When The Mummy was over I took a quick inventory of what I had just seen. Did I laugh? No. Was I scared? No. Was I entertained? Sort of. How did it compare to the 1932 version? Heavy on the digital effects which made the new mummy look like a cartoon, making me realize that nothing could ever replace Jack Pierce’s make up or Boris Karloff’s performance. But I knew that already.

Obviously, Universal Studios would not keep milking The Mummy cash cow if it wasn’t making money. Does some studio head sit around and think: what franchise hasn’t become a trilogy yet? Eureka, Brendan Fraser’s Mummy movies! Did Universal Studios need a big summer movie? No. They just released Wanted and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. So what am I missing?

I am right with you, only difference was that I was excited by the original trailer and was extremely let down by the followthrough. To me it was Universal's attempt to create their own Indiana Jones - and I'm sorry but BF is not even in the same continent when compared to Harrison Ford. The fact that it has spawned so many sequels is a mystery to me. This last one should kill it dead.

(and unless I missed it and I apologize if I did)
Enough about the Mummy and on with the info about Dark City SE dammit! :)

I liked the Mummy and The Mummy 2. Good fun adventure movies, and Mummy's never scared me anyway. Seriously, show me a scary mummy, MAYBE the one from the Christian Slater story from the "Tales From The Darkside Movie", but the first 2 mummy movies, extremely fun, and they most definitely had the Flare of the Indiana Jones movies. Which wasn't a bad thing, since at that time we did not know we'd get another installment of Dr. Jones.

I can watch he first 2 mummy movies again and again, fun adventure movies.

Where the hell is the review of the Mummy 3 on this site?

I really enjoyed the 1st one. 2nd one not so much. No way I'll see the turd, I mean 3rd one. Dual CGI armies fighting to save/control all humanity? That shit is old-hat. I'm over it.

The Mummy movies and The Scorpion King are pure popcorn entertainment. You either get it or you don't. I liked seeing the latest Mummy movie because it was a lot of fun and was different from the dark subject matter of The Dark Knight and The X Files. Just sit back ane enjoy it or be quiet and let others enjoy it.

gauleyboy... MY review is here:
http://www.mania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5803
its in the Mania Forums section and it even has a poll attached to it. Personally I loved it, everythign that i didnt like about Indiana Jones 4 is fixed for Mummy 3

I mean if you guys are going to bash the shit out of some movie, at least go see it first so you're bashing will be justified, the second was a retread of the first (its the SAME mummy...twice!) ok here we're getting Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh as new protagonists (well Michelle isnt a mummy... she's just ...hmm)

YETI's... ARE JUST FRAKKIN COOL!

of course we've all seen warring undead armies... ARMY OF DARKNESS (minus the CGI) this works... I wish they'd used CGI in Army of Darkness instead we got sad little puppets on horses.

this movie kicks ass, if you hated the second one (I'd completely forgotten all about the second one... hell I'd even forgotten about the first one. Maria Bello is a terrific replacment for Rachel Weisz. Brenden Fraiser isnt a crusty 67 year old gheezer who is indestructable, nope but he's got the father/son thing fairly well, apparantly he took a few notes from Sean Connery (in IJ:Last Crusade) too - LOL!

GREAT FLICK... 'nuff said

I agree with Tate, I thought the first Mummy was kind of a bore and the second one was a noisy bore. I'm not saying I don't see the popcorn appeal of either film, I just didn't particularly care for them. I would like to see this latest installment though, I just hope it's better than the first two. I will say that I'm a huge fan of the original 1932 version.

I haven't seen the new Mummy film, but McKracken, aren't Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh the antagonists(villians) and not protagonists (good guys)?

Also, I don't think that Sam Raimi realistically had the option for CGI baddies in Army of Darkness. It was released back in 1992 when CGI was still in its infantancy.

oops jet Li is the Antagonist... Michelle Yeoh actually is a protagonist one of the good guys! Michelle's character summons the Yeti, which are good.
